EC348 Economics of Innovation, Block 7

Economics of Innovation in Block 7 includes a weeklong field trip to Boston. The field trip is in third week and involves very long, demanding days, often starting at 7 am and not returning to the hotel until 9 pm.

The course fee is $400.

  • The course fee covers lodging, meals in Boston during the program dates, and local transportation in Boston from the hotel.
  • Students are responsible for arranging and paying for their own airfare, transport to the airport and hotel, and meals while in transit to Boston.
  • Financial aid is available. Based on the Financial Aid office’s determination, aid may cover some or all of the course fee, airfare, transport, and meals

A note from Dan Johnson:

As you probably know, the EC348 Economics of Innovation class usually has a long waitlist. That's despite the pretty heavy workload: we read academic articles for two weeks on campus, then spend a long work-week in Boston on a consulting schedule (7:30am to 9pm, all in business clothes at meetings and research sites), before ending with a capstone project that synthesizes all of that using the same creative processes we study and practice together.

To ensure that the class experience is optimized for all participants, we require applications by a deadline of 5pm on November 10 (4th Monday of Block 3) so that they can be reviewed and admission can be offered during Block Break before pre-registration begins. That way, everyone will know whether or not to enroll in the course, which requires a COI code.

It is a course with really high benefits (we have always found job or internship placement for at least one student in the class, and usually more) but it also has really high costs. If you don't have the prerequisites (both EC301 and EC302), or if you can't step away from literally all other obligations for third week of Block 7 to be fully present with us on the trip, or if you just don't feel like working that hard in Block 7... then please don't apply.

To apply, review the application and then take a bit of time to apply thoughtfully here: Summit link

BU121 Social Entrepreneurship, Block 8

Please note that BU121 has a multi-day field trip to Baca early in the block, on days 2-5 (First Tuesday – First Friday). Please reach out to Celeste Diaz Ferraro with any questions about the field trip timing.
