Keep audiences engaged and avoid heavy blocks of text by using Content Types in Cascade CMS. These built-in formatting tools help Colorado College web authors organize information more intuitively and create a more accessible user experience. Explore the examples below—such as accordions, card decks, and profile listings—to see how these tools can bring your web pages to life.

Standard Web Page Content

Think of this as your primary workspace. This versatile text box allows you to tell your story by adding text, images, videos, hyperlinks, and embedded content like Google Calendars. It's also the ideal place to build tables for course grids and schedules.

A quick tip on copying and pasting: Pasting text directly from an email or a Word document often brings along hidden, undesirable formatting code that can break your page's design. To keep your pages looking clean and functioning well for our audiences, try one of these simple workarounds before bringing your text into Cascade:

  • Convert to clean HTML: Paste your document's text into wordhtml.com first. This will quickly strip out any messy background styling and provide clean HTML to paste into Cascade.
  • Use the "Paste as text" tool: You can toggle on "Paste as text" under "Edit" in the top right of your Cascade toolbar. Just keep in mind this will remove all formatting, including bolding, italics, and tables.
  • Use a plain text editor: Paste your content into a basic editor like NotePad or TextEdit to remove hidden styling, then copy and paste that plain text into your webpage.

Accordion

This is the content that is hidden until clicked. This is also a standard text box that you can insert links, images, videos, and embedded content.

Use an accordion for optional, clearly labeled details that visitors can choose to explore, while keeping essential information and the main action visible.

This was the "CC - Card Deck" widget in dotCMS.

While you can cram as much stuff as you want in here, beware there's a lot of formatting with card decks that we cannot control. Card decks also make for a great template for reusable content.

You add everything that you could add in the standard content container. Obviously, this is a much smaller space, so it's recommended that you don't add anything larger/more complex than a logo image or simple picture. The WES logo is a good example.

You'll need to make a separate card deck content container if you want to have different colors or have another row. It is not recommended to have card decks contain the bulk of your text information or images, but rather to highlight something important such as contact info, mission statement, or office hours.

To set up a clive form, contact the web paraprof. We HIGHLY discourage using third-party embedded forms because those always get lost and become inaccessible when the person who made that form leaves CC.

Photo Gallery

There are two style options for the Photo Gallery content type—Slider Carousel and Modal Overlay. The first gallery displayed below is the Slider Carousel style. It is only designed for horizontal images. Notice how the images here are cropped compared to the ones in the Modal Overlay below it? The second gallery is the Modal Overlay style. It displays the first image in the gallery. When users click on it, a pop-up is displayed where the user can scroll through all of the photos. It displays best when a horizontal image is used as the first image in the gallery because it is designed to take up the full page width. This makes vertical images (like the one used in this gallery) quite large, requiring scrolling on some screens to see the full image.

This is quite clunky. 

Unless you're really insistent on having the choice of the show/hide indicator.

I guess having options is fun.

The editing text box here gets cluttered really quickly.

This makes editing in the future quite cumbersome.

Just use the accordion. It's so much easier!

I promise it'll save you time and frustration.

Side-by-side text content

Left Content.

You can also have 1/3-2/3 split. That can be used to create more detailed profiles/bios with a small image.

Right Content (shows side-by-side when there is no sidebar on the page). If inserting images or videos, make sure to constrain the proportions so that they're the same size. It looks really funny otherwise.

This is the "Associated Text" and is like the description box under YouTube videos. Associated Text has more options than Caption in Cascade.
