Research at CC: Who Researches What?

Outside CC: UROP

A web search for the term "UROP" (Undergraduate Research Opportunities) and the subject matter you are would like to pursue will help you find summer research opportunities at many universities. E.g., "UROP Chemistry", "UROP Biology".

Outside CC: REU and SROP

The National Science Foundation (NSF) funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Sites program. A REU site consists of a group of approximately ten undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she/they work closely with faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. These opportunities are available only to students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

The Big Ten Academic Alliance operates the Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP). This program is a gateway to graduate education at Big Ten Academic Alliance institutions. The goal of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented students who pursue graduate study and research careers. SROP helps prepare undergraduates for graduate study through intensive research experiences with faculty mentors and enrichment activities.

Outside CC: ACM-GSEF

Sophomores interested in going to graduate school in the humanities or humanistic social sciences should check out the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) Graduate School Exploration Fellowship (GSEF). CC sends three- four students every year to be a part of the GSEF cohort. We are now accepting applications for a third cohort of students to be selected as ACM GSE fellows for:

• a professional development conference this summer (2018), and
• paid summer research internship in the summer of 2019 at one of the Big Ten Academic Alliance institutions.

To be eligible, students must:

• express a strong interest in pursuing graduate work in the humanities, humanistic social sciences, and the arts (see official ACM list of eligible fields),
• have sophomore standing,
• be a US citizen or permanent resident, and
• be from an underrepresented group (see ACM explanation of underrepresented groups).
