Thomas Post Rawles Prize

Professor Rawles contributed funds to the college in the name of his son (Thomas Post Rawles) for the enhancement of the Mathematics Department. Starting in 1972, the department used part of the funds as prizes for the top performers in an all-college mathematics exam. The Rawles exam has been given annually since then.

Sophie Germain Award

In 2010, John Watkins, who retired from the department, suggested an award named after Sophie Germain, a French mathematician who overcame hurdles and prejudice of the time to study mathematics and become celebrated for her work in the field. With a contribution from Watkins to fund the prize, the department established the Sophie Germain award for exemplary passion and extraordinary performance in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. A plaque listing the following award winners hangs in the department lounge area.

Euclid Scholars

In 2009, John Tompkins who graduated (1989) from the college with a degree in mathematics generously gave the college a substantial gift to establish scholarships for first and second year students. They are named Euclid scholarships and are merit-based awards to support the study of mathematics and computer science within a liberal arts context. Tompkins was appreciative of what his experience in the mathematics department meant to him and his gift was intended to encourage students in their study of mathematics. Others have contributed to the fund over the years and now the department is able to award several scholarships each year amounting to several thousand dollars each.
