Ritt Kellogg Climbing Gym

The Ritt Kellogg Climbing Gym is a FREE on-campus resource for students, faculty, and staff. This facility includes a large climbing room as well as a training area. Options exist for bouldering, top-roping, lead-climbing, dry-tooling, slack-lining, and training. All ability levels are encouraged to come, and equipment is provided for free for those without any personal climbing gear. The Ritt Gym Staff also offer a wide variety of clinics and workshops throughout the year!

The Ritt Kellogg Climbing Gym is OPEN during the Summer! 

We are pleased to announce the Ritt Kellogg Climbing Gym is currently open with limited capacity, services, and operations. Along with the El Pomar Fitness Center, we are taking many precautions to reduce health risks to our patrons.

All active employees and students who are approved to be on campus are welcome to use the facility. 

Group Climbing Sessions:


Interested in bringing a group to the Ritt Kellogg Climbing Gym? Reserve a time slot for your group and you'll have the whole climbing gym all to yourselves! 
  • Hourly blocks of time can be reserved for groups on Mondays, Weeks 1-4 between 4:00pm-7:00pm each block. 
  • Groups must have at least 4 people but may not exceed 8 total during an hour block.

Regular Academic Operating Hours will resume Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021.

To ensure an environment that allows for proper social distancing, we recommend making a reservation to use the climbing wall. There will be a limited number of climbers allowed to climb each hour block. 

Reservations are highly recommended but there are always 2 first come, first serve, drop in spots each hour. 

COVID-19 RISK MITIGATION INFORMATION:

Due to the public health risks posed by COVID-19, the following modifications have been made to your visit to the fitness center and climbing wall. Please read carefully and take note of the following.

  • If you are exhibiting or experiencing any symptoms related to COVID-19 (fever, cough, chills, shortness of breath, loss of sense of taste or smell, muscle pain, headache, etc.), please do not come to the fitness center, and do seek medical attention.

  • The campus, to include the fitness center and climbing wall, is closed to visitors including family members, retirees, alumni, and job candidates.

  • Please have your Gold Card out and ready to show at check-in.

  • Make sure to complete the Daily COVID-19 Check in the CC App and be ready to show your approved status upon entry to the building.

  • When you arrive, enter through the north entrance doors.

  • You will first receive a temperature check and symptom survey. After that, we will confirm your booking and you will be on your way! Please inform the front desk staff that you have a climbing wall reservation.

  • Masks are required to enter and move about in the fitness center and are required to work out per the State of Colorado directive. Masks must be worn while climbing. All fitness center and climbing wall staff are wearing masks at all times.

  • Proper social distancing is expected at all times. No congregating or loitering in common spaces, hallways, stairwells, or work areas and if you use the elevator, please note that only one person can ride it at a time.

  • Stay to the right when moving about the fitness center and when ascending and/or descending the stairwell.

  • The locker rooms are closed until further notice so please come dressed to work out and please limit the amount of personal items brought into the facility.

  • Sharing equipment is strongly discouraged at this time.

  • Restrooms are available upstairs and a single occupancy/gender inclusive restroom is available downstairs.

  • When exiting the fitness center, please follow posted signage and use the east facing doors just south of the rec gym (when walking through the rec gym balcony seating area).

  • Student and Professional staff will be available to help.

  • Please bring your own climbing equipment if you have it. Climbing harnesses, shoes, and belay devices will be available for those who do not have their own.

  • No loose chalk will be allowed. Liquid chalk will be provided.

  • Climbers should wash their hands with soap and water before entering the climbing wall area.

  • Climbers must fill out the updated Risk Acknowledgement and COVID Policies Waiver once per academic year.

  • Climbers should use hand sanitizer before and after each climb (the use of liquid chalk will also be acceptable).

  • A maximum of 2 climbers will be allowed in each designated climbing zone at a time.

  • A maximum of 1 participant in the climbing training area will be allowed at a time.

Weekly Clinics and Programs 

*DUE TO COVID-19, not all clinics and programs are operating as normal. Please check SUMMIT to find all current clinic and program offerings. 

Women's Wednesdays, 4-6pm

Join us for some women only fun! this weekly timeslot is reserved for female identifying people who want to climb with other women! All skill levels are welcome! This happens every block during weeks 1-3. Make sure to check Summit for special Women's Wednesday Clinics as well!

Top Rope Belay Classes, Various times-Register on Summit

If you are new to climbing or just need a refresher on safe belay practices, register for one of our Top Rope Belay Classes! Belaying is the process of safely taking in slack in the rope as the climber progresses up the climbing wall, which protects them in case of a fall. Belaying is an important part of the climbing chain of safety and one of the most important skills that all climbers must become proficient in to become a safe climber.

If you already know how to properly and safely belay, stop by the climbing gym at anytime and ask for a Belay Assessment! Our belay assessments are based off of the American Alpine Universal Belay Standards.

Prerequisites: No previous experience required!

Lead Belay Classes,Various times-Register on Summit

If you are excited to take your indoor or outdoor climbing to the next level, register for one of our Lead Belay Classes. This class will build off of your top rope belay skills and will enable you to belay someone who is "leading" a climb from the ground up. This class will also introduce how to lead climb as well, which is an essential skill to learn in a safe environment like our indoor climbing wall! Lead climbing is the process of starting with both the rope and climber on the ground and the climber works their way up the wall, clipping into quickdraws (anchors) on the wall as they move higher and higher, protecting themselves from landing on the ground in the event of a fall.

If you already know how to properly and safely belay, stop by the climbing gym at anytime and ask for a Belay Assessment! Our belay assessments are based off of the American Alpine Universal Belay Standards.

Prerequisites: Must be Top Rope Belay Certified at the Ritt Kellogg Climbing Gym and feel comfortable top rope belaying before attending this clinic.

Open Route Setting

Are you interested in helping to create some of the awesome routes at the climbing wall? Stop by our Open Setting hours every Tuesday from 1:00-3:30p during weeks 1-3 of each block. Our route setter staff will provide a safety orientation and will help you along the process of learning how to set fun and challenging climbing routes!

Aerial Silks Classes

All are welcome to come experience the exciting world of aerial silks through hands on instruction. Silks participants will learn to use the fabric that is suspended from the climbing wall to swing, fall, suspend, and spiral their bodies into and out of various positions. Classes are offered for all skill levels including beginner and intermediate.

The Ritt Kellogg Climbing Gym is a gym that is meant to be a fun, safe, welcoming, and educational space for all of the CC community. We offer a wide variety of clinics for all skills and ability levels. The clinics are taught inline with industry standards and will help any climber take their skills to the next level and learn how to be safe in the process!
