Guide Trips for CCOE

The Apprentice Guide position is a volunteer role working under CCOE Trip Coordinators, Lead, and Assistant Guides. Apprentice Guides are CC students who have completed the CCOE's Guide Training who are continuing to develop their outdoor leadership competencies to prepare for the Assistant Guide Position.

Qualifications:

• Must complete Guide School through the Ahlberg Leadership Institute.
• Must have current First Aid (WFR Preferred), CPR, LNT Level 1 certifications and other activity specific certifications as required to lead a broad range of trip offerings.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of Apprentice Guide include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Ability to participate in moderate to strenuous physical outdoor activities.
• Work under the guidance of Trip Coordinators, Lead, and Assistant Guides to support trip needs including but not limited to:
  • Trip Promotion
  • Trip Planning and packing
  • Equipment cleaning and repair
  • Inventory
  • Group management
• Help organize and assist pre-trip meetings for day, weekend, block break, and extended break trip formats.
• Receptive to consistent feedback and demonstrate a commitment to personal and professional growth.
• Actively engage in the ADEI efforts of CCOE and contribute as a welcoming and inclusive community member.

The Assistant Guide position is an entry level role working under CCOE professional staff's guidance. Assistant Guides are responsible for supporting the implementation of CCOE trips, mentoring Apprentice guides, and working with CCOE professional staff and Trip Coordinators to implement the overall vision for CCOE trips. Assistant Guides must be competent in leading multiple technical outdoor skill sets.

Qualifications:

• Must have completed the Guide Apprenticeship through the Ahlberg Leadership Institute.
• Must have current WFR, CPR, LNT certifications and other activity specific certifications as required to lead a broad range of trip offerings.
• A demonstrated commitment to, and working knowledge of, ADEI principles and practices.
• Demonstrated ability to set and achieve goals related to personal development.
• Experience with backcountry navigation using a topographical map and compass.
• Ability to perform program activities at a level that allows assisting participants and providing mentorship for Apprentice Guides.
• Colorado College Driver Certified.

Responsibilities of Assistant Guide include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Facilitation of moderate to strenuous outdoor activities.
• Work under the guidance of Trip Coordinators and Lead Guides to ensure trip needs are addressed including but not limited to:
  • Trip Promotion
  • Trip Planning and packing
  • Transportation
  • Equipment cleaning and repair
  • Inventory
  • Group management
  • Risk management
  • Apprentice Guide development
• Organize and assist pre-trip meetings for day, weekend, block break, and extended break trip formats.
• Exhibit professionalism and leadership in work and community spaces.
• Supervise and direct appropriate emergency response in the backcountry.
• Consistently provide and receive feedback.
• Ensure the timely execution of CCOE policies and procedures.
• Manage participant groups.
• Mentor and coach Apprentice Guides while in the field.
• Actively engage in the ADEI efforts of CCOE and contribute as a welcoming and inclusive community member.
• Maintain active trip leader status by leading at least 1 block and 2 weekend trips/semester within the Outdoor Education trip program.
• Broaden the Outdoor Education community at CC by encouraging student leadership and participation by actively recruiting new student trip leaders and marketing trip programs across campus.

The Lead Guide position is a supervisory role working under CCOE professional staff's guidance. Lead Guides are responsible for overseeing the implementation of CCOE trips, mentoring Assistant guides, directing the mentorship of Apprentice Guides, and working with CCOE professional staff and trip coordinators to create overall vision for CCOE trips. Lead Guides must be competent in teaching multiple technical outdoor skill sets.

Qualifications:

• Must be a current Assistant Guide with CC Outdoor Ed.
• Must have current WFR, CPR, LNT certifications and other activity specific certifications as required to lead a broad range of trip offerings.
• A demonstrated commitment to, and working knowledge of, ADEI principles and practices. Able to mentor others in this work.
• Demonstrated ability to set and achieve goals related to personal development.
• Experience teaching backcountry navigation using a topographical map and compass.
• Ability to perform program activities at a level that permits supervision of others facilitating the activity.
• Colorado College Driver Certified.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of Lead Guide include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Supervision of moderate to strenuous outdoor activities.
• Work under the guidance of Trip Coordinators and CCOE professional staff to ensure trip needs are addressed including but not limited to:
  • Trip Promotion
  • Trip Planning and packing
  • Transportation
  • Equipment cleaning and repair
  • Inventory
  • Group management
  • Risk management
  • Assistant and Apprentice Guide development
• Organize and lead pre-trip meetings.
• Exhibit professionalism and leadership in work and community spaces.
• Supervise and direct appropriate emergency response in the backcountry.
• Consistently provide and receive feedback.
• Ensure the timely execution of CCOE policies and procedures.
• Anticipate issues among participant groups and proactively address them. Oversee conflict resolution as appropriate.
• Direct the mentorship of Apprentice Guides while in the field. Serve as a mentor to Assistant Guides. Work with CCOE pro staff to identify areas of growth for Apprentice and Assistant Guides.

The Student Trip Coordinator works to set the vision for Outdoor Education trips for both day and overnight trips. Under the guidance and supervision of the Assistant Director, coordinate all trips, clinics and workshops offered through Outdoor Education, assisting in the organization and risk management as well as creating an open and inclusive Outdoor Education community.

Qualifications:

• Must be a current Lead Guide for CCOE.
• Demonstrated ability to set and achieve goals related to personal development and the development of others.
• Detail oriented with effective organizational skills.
• Ability to articulate a big picture vision and steps to achieve that vision.
• Ability to ensure the safe and appropriate use of equipment and materials by others.
• Effective written and oral communicator, with the ability to give and receive positive and constructive feedback.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of Trip Coordinator include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Attend and support Outdoor Education staff meetings.
• Assist in monitoring the safety, accessibility, and logistical details of trips: Approve trips on Summit; Schedule and attend approval meetings with trip leaders and staff; Assist leaders in organizing any unique trip logistics, including but not limited to gear, lodging, and transportation; Schedule and attend post trip meetings with trip leaders.
• Maintain active trip leader status by leading at least 1 block break and 2 weekend trips per semester within the Outdoor Education trip program.
• Assist in coordinating and leading training for CCOE Apprentice, Assistant, and Lead Guides.
• Review and submit student trip leader time sheets.
• Actively participate and work on a personal development plan and the development plans of Assistant and Apprentice Guides.
• Broaden the Outdoor Education community at CC by encouraging student leadership and participation by actively recruiting new student trip leaders and marketing trip programs across campus.
• Attend set office hours throughout the week.
• Actively participate in continuing education training and ADEI programming.
• Other duties as assigned.

Guiding trips for CCOE often takes place in remote settings outside of normal working hours. Student employees within CCOE's Trip Program can expect the following:

• Must be able to participate in all site and trip activities and maintain ample energy, strength and focus to aid participants and guides, with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Consistently active – sometimes 16+ hours a day, or possibly more in the case of an emergency.
• At minimum, be able to travel over and negotiate through varied wilderness terrain with a backpack/equipment weighing up to or exceeding 60 pounds.
• Travel conditions may include, but are not limited to, rough, rugged, uneven steep and sloping terrain; human made and animal made trails; rocky terrain that may range from smooth bedrock to extensive areas of large rock boulders (boulder fields); needing to cross rivers and creeks without the aid of bridges up to three feet or more in depth; ascending, descending or traversing slopes covered in snow, rocks or vegetation; bushwhacking off trail through thick standing and/or downed vegetation. All travel can occur during periods of inclement weather or nighttime hours.
  • Travel distances can range from less than one mile to more than ten miles in one day.
  • Travel duration can range from less than one hour to more than 12 hours in one day and occur on successive days
• Able to have a third point of contact for balance purposes for travel through deep rivers, on snow slopes or ascending or descending slopes.
• Although groups will often be able to take hourly breaks or camp early if the weather becomes hazardous, occasionally this is not possible. Examples include: descending/ascending a 2000' boulder choked gully; descending a peak with a threatening thunderstorm; descending a mountain pass in similar conditions.
• Positions self to move, set up, and utilize equipment in the backcountry. Work is sometimes done in confined spaces and at height.
• Ability to swim in accordance with program activities.
