In 1990, John Watkins was awarded a GTE Focus Grant to design and run a summer program for high school students from the San Luis Valley in Colorado. The two-week program brings about 16 students to campus and introduces them to college-level study in mathematics, science, and computing . The aim is to encourage them to continue their education. Each summer since 1990, Watkins has continued the program and solicited the participation of other department members (often with help from the paraprofessionals). The 1999 summer program focused on the mathematics of symmetry. |
