Course Description: The landscape of ancient Greece gave rise to the myths that endure into the twenty-first century. The vineyards of Dionysos, the olive tree of Athena, and the sailboat of Poseidon captured the imagination and sustained the economy in antiquity as now. The myths also inspired the many monuments that remain and remind us of the culture that inhabited these same spaces thousands of years ago. In this course, on site in Greece, the home of some of the most fabled ancient myths and monuments in world history, students will explore the intersections of landscape, monumental structures, and myths. The Parthenon of Athena and the Theater of Dionysos on the Athenian acropolis, the vineyards of the Peloponesos, the sacred oracle of Delphi, Homer's wine-dark Aegean Sea, the storied temple of Poseidon at Sounion, and more will begin to yield up some of their secrets as we read the ancient texts in their presence.

Program Fee: $3050 (this includes some meals but not airfare). The program fee covers an apartment in Athens, use of the facilities at the Athens Centre-classroom space, computing and printing facilities, emergency support and assistance, a welcome banquet, free coffee, entry to all museums and archaeological sites, and field trips with swimming.

Airfare: TBD.

Food/Outside Expenses: Students should budget $250 for food. Students who have a Bon Appetit meal plan during the semester in which they enroll in a block off-campus will receive a one-block meal plan refund which can be used for meals abroad. The amount of the refund depends on the meal plan you chose for the semester. All students who have a meal plan and enroll in a course off-campus will receive the refund, even if the program fee includes some meals. For students without a meal plan, the apartments in Athens have a kitchen and cooking implements, and are situated near markets with produce and bakeries.

All-College Requirements: This course does not fulfill any all-college requirements.

Pre-Requisites: There are no pre-requisites for this course.

Other Information: For the course, plan to arrive no later than the Saturday before Block 2 starts (that means leaving by Friday, as the flight is overnight). Plan on departing on the Thursday after the last day of Block 2.
