Getting Started with Field & Global Study

Lots of choices:

1) THIS WEBSITE is a great starting point, with image links below to pages about every type of study away option as well as pages on eligibilty requirements, scholarships, predeparture planning, and other important topics. 

2) At our 3 annual STUDY AWAY FAIRS:  Semester Away Fair in Block 1,  Summer Fair in Block 4, and the biggie, the Study Away Fair (with both semester reps and Block Away faculty on hand) is in Block 5.

3) Checking out the DAILY DIGEST in your email, also found all the time at TODAY AT CC regularly for announcements, especially in November (Summer Programs announced) and during Half-Block (Next Year's Blocks announced), but at any time during the year we could be publicizing new Career Catalyst Blocks, or programs that are seeking more applications. 

4) Each block (in Week 2) there is an EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION @ CC NEWSLETTER that will come to your email inbox. That newsletter will have news and upcoming events, updates, and highlights of programs that are open for applications. It also will provide info on any workshops or events led by our team. 

5) Follow us on INSTAGRAM - @ccglobalandfieldstudy - for regular news about current and upcoming programs and opportunities, as well as deadlines and news about study away. 

6) TALK TO FOLKS AROUND CC: Speaking with your faculty, with Hub advisors, and with our team, or even just learning what other students have done can be a great way to get started. Always do your research, because programs change one year to the next and not all programs are available every year, but just talking with others at CC can inspire you to find a great option for you. 

All applications to join  Study Away programs (Blocks Away, Language Immersion, Semester or Year Away, and Career Catalyst Blocks) occur on the Summit platform and the Global Education portal. 

CC Faculty-Led Blocks & Career Catalysts: Apply on Summit. Once approved, you confirm your spot and receive the pin code needed to register for the course on Banner. 

CC Language Immersion: The CC full and half-semester language programs also require a Summit application in the "Semester Away" pool. As with blocks, once approved you will confirm your spot and then receive the pin code to register on Banner. 

Partner-Led Semester or Year Away: For partner-led semester or year away programs, you must complete the Internal Application in Summit as well as the partner's application form. We recommend meeting with your CC Advisors and with our Global Ed team before submitting your application for a semester away.

All study away programs, whether CC Faculty-led or Partner-led, have priority application windows. As most programs operate on a rolling admissions policy, early applications within each window are highly recommended. It is possible to apply to many programs after those windows close, but it is not recommended as many programs will fill during their window and it is typical that all aid (for summer or school year blocks) is distributed to students who were approved during the priority window, so both approval for a program and the possibility of aid is lower for students who sign up after the windows close. 

PRIORITY APPLICATION WINDOWS & DEADLINES

Summer Block Away Window:  Block 4 through Half Block (Typically around December 1 - January 15)

Academic Year Block Away Window:  Block 5 into Block 6  (Typically around February 1 - March 15)

Career Catalyst Blocks: Unlike other blocks away, CCB courses can be announced at different times during the year. They often have a short 30-60 day application window, so it is important to check in regularly if you are interested in the CCB program and to apply when you learn of one which interests you. 

CC Language Immersion Full or Half-Semesters:  These follow the same timeline as Partner-Led semesters, with March 1 being the priority deadline for Fall programs and October 1 for Spring programs. 

Partner Led Semester or Year Away:

CC Internal Application Opens: Mid-November of the prior year.   

Priority Deadline for Fall Semester & Full Year Away:  March 1

Priority Deadline for Spring Semester Away: October 1

BE ADVISED: Students applying for a partner-led program must complete BOTH the partner's application and the CC Internal Application, and that partner applications can have different start and deadline dates than CC.

In addition to external grants and scholarships (See image link below), Colorado College provides significant financial aid to students who qualify for need-based support.

The aid format and timing varies based upon the program type, with Blocks Away and Career Catalyst Blocks offering targeted grants, while Semester and Year Away programs are funded primarily through standard CC semester charges, without additional costs in many cases, and with a student's annual aid package in place to support off-campus semesters, adjusted to match the estimated cost of attendance.

Absolutely!!!

That's how we see 70%, 75% and even sometimes 80% of graduates each year with study away courses on their transcript.  It is even more like 95% or higher when we add courses that had field experiences to the mix. But (there is always a but)... there are some limits on timing. 

Mostly No. It just takes more lead time to prepare for study away. Programs need to lock in their rosters in order to book housing, students need to purchase airfare and attend orientation meetings. So, study away, in all its forms requires earlier applications.  See the "When to Apply" for more guidance. 

But we said "mostly no", and that is because you can registere for courses that have field study components as part of the normal registration process. They do not have the same need for advance planning so students can add them just as they would add any other on-campus course. When you are looking at the courses available, look for a Field Trip designation in Banner. You will also be able to see if the course requires a course fee because of the field experience, though, happily, most do not.
