Students who meet these eligibility requirements do NOT need to take any additional placement tests within the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department for placement out of CH107 and/or CH108.

Additionally, the department offers a placement exam for students with strong high school chemistry preparation who do NOT have AP or IB credits and would like to try to test out of CH107 and/or CH108.

The QRC is supporting the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in offering the placement exam for students who are interested in trying to test out of CH107 on following dates this semester:

  • Oct. 14 (3rd Friday of Block 2), 1:15 pm
  • Oct. 24 (1st Monday of Block 3), 1:15 pm
  • Nov. 28 (1st Monday of Block 4), 1:15 pm

The placement exam is a 110-minute standardized test.  If you are interested in taking this placement exam, please sign up on this Google form.  We can provide scores and placement results on the same day that you complete the test.  If you test into CH108, we currently have openings in Blocks 3 and 4 for you to seamlessly transfer to CH108 immediately.

If you are interested in trying the placement exam, we strongly encourage you do a bit of refreshing by dusting off your high school chemistry and reviewing some general chemistry prior to taking the exam.  For reference, the following free online textbook can be useful for review:

OpenStax Chemistry 2e textbook

  • CH107 material is found in Chapters 1-10, and Chapter 21 (lightly covered): This is also the material covered in General Chemistry 1 placement exam.
  • CH108 material is found in Chapters 11-17.  Students with strong preparation who place out of CH107 are also eligible take an additional placement exam to test out of CH108.

Please reach out to Prof. Amy Dounay, Department Chair (adounay@coloradocollege.edu), if you have any questions about placing out of CH107 or any other questions about selecting the most appropriate starting chemistry course at CC.

Looking forward to meeting you in future chemistry courses in the department!
