Figge-Bourquin Summer Research Award

The Health Professions Advisory Committee supports stipends for pre-health students engaged in a scientific research project or for a student doing research with an application in the medical disciplines. Two to three awards have been granted annually in recent years.

Summary

The Figge and Bourquin endowments are dedicated to supporting students who plan on careers in the medical profession (i.e., pre-health students) or those who are furthering the medical disciplines. Not every research project needs to be medical in nature, since research experiences in other fields are beneficial to pre-health students. Typically, the call is issued via email by the Health Professions Advisory Committee in Block 5, with the deadline in Block 6. Please await the call before submitting a proposal.

Scope

The Award will be used to support a scientific research project undertaken by a CC student in collaboration with CC faculty. The Figge and Bourquin endowments are dedicated to supporting students who plan on careers in the medical profession (i.e., pre-health students) or those who are furthering the medical disciplines. Not every research project needs to be medical in nature, since research experiences in other fields are beneficial to pre-health students.

The award will fund a $4000 summer stipend for the student, as well as $500 for research supplies (to be deposited in the faculty mentor's research account). It is expected that the student researcher will commit his or her full effort to the project for 10 weeks during the summer. The stipend will be paid in three equal payments, with the final payment released only after the faculty mentor reports satisfactory completion of the project and the student submits a brief (one page) report to the Health Professions Director.

Eligibility

Any CC student in good standing, with a demonstrated interest in medical research or a career in the health professions, is eligible to apply for the grants or the Award. The selection criteria will include the scientific merit of the proposal, the academic record of the student, and the likelihood that the research project will further medicine or enhance the career of a future medical professional.

Application Procedure

The application should consist of:

  • A brief (approx. one page) description of the proposed research (prepared by the student researcher in consultation with the faculty mentor).
  • A letter of support from the faculty mentor indicating a willingness to oversee the ten-week project and the appropriateness of this student to the specific
  • A statement of interest from the student researcher, describing his or her motivation for the project and related career
  • Please submit all application materials to CC's Pre-Health Manager, Jane Byrnes (Byrnes@ColoradoCollege.edu)
