We exist to to harness our institutional capacity to support college access and forge accessible pathways to Colorado College, in collaboration with schools and community organizations in the Pikes Peak Region.

Why should I do this program?

This program will help eliminate obstacles to gain acceptance into Colorado College, an esteemed liberal arts insitution right here in Colorado Springs! We provide you with extra education and resources to be prepared for college, in ways that you might not currently have access to. 

Figuring out all the aspects of a journey toward college can be intimidating, but this free program can help you get there! (Plus, sometimes we have free food!!)

What is the Stroud Scholars Program?

The Stroud Scholars Program is a three-year college preparatory program that helps high school students in Colorado Springs prepare academically and personally for college. Scholars engage in summer courses, mentorship, and year-round programs designed to strengthen academic skills, build confidence, and provide community support.

This free college preparatory program will set you up for success in navigating education after high school. You can see a college experience up close, and gain potential to earn admission to CC. Networking is also a key element of the program, and you can make friends from across the city for years to come!

The program seeks students who:

  • Are intellectually curious and excited about learning.
  • Have a strong drive to go to college and achieve their dreams.
  • Are dedicated to a three-year commitment and willing to engage actively.
  • Would benefit from additional college prep resources and support.
  • Bring diverse perspectives and experiences that can enrich college communities.

Eligibility is focused on 9th graders from the Pikes Peak Region who:

  • Are from low-income families (annual household income of $60,000 or less, or up to $75,000 for families with four or more dependents).
  • Would be the first in their family to attend a four-year college.
  • Are from historically excluded communities.
  • Attend schools that have limited resources for college readiness support.

Students can apply by completing an online application, which includes essay questions, and potentially, a creative video post. Grades and test scores aren’t the main focus; the committee wants to learn more about you as a person. Applicants may be nominated by someone in their community, but self-applications are also encouraged.

The application process includes:

  • Online Application: The application introduces you to the selection committee and includes essay questions to understand your interests and goals.
  • Interview: Selected applicants will have an interview to share more about themselves. The goal is for both sides to get to know each other better.
  • Final Selection: After interviews, a cohort of students is selected, and those chosen will be asked to confirm their commitment to the program.

The summer program is a two to three-week session (depending on what year you are in the program) on Colorado College’s campus where you’ll take courses to build quantitative reasoning and writing skills. You’ll also participate in social and academic events, which are great for bonding with mentors and other scholars. Attendance is required each day to make the most of the experience.

Throughout the school year, you’ll attend at least seven events (~one per month) that cover various academic and life skills topics. These events allow you to continue learning, connect with mentors, and explore new ideas and places in Colorado Springs.

You’ll be paired with a mentor who is a current Colorado College student. Your mentor will provide guidance, answer questions, and help you navigate the program. Mentoring events are a chance to build relationships and get advice from someone who understands college life.

Yes, students who successfully complete the Stroud Scholars Program and meet all program requirements can earn admission to Colorado College with a financial aid package to help cover costs.

The program understands that emergencies or scheduling conflicts happen. If you must miss an event, the team will work with you to find a way to make it up. If you need transportation, bus or shuttle options are available to get you to and from campus.

Your family is encouraged to attend events, stay informed about your progress, and provide support. The program values family engagement and offers resources to help families support their students through the college journey.

If you want to nominate someone, you can submit their name to the Stroud Scholars team. The program will follow up with the nominee and invite them to apply. Nominators of selected students will be recognized by Colorado College for their support.

First Stroud Cohort Matriculates!

Nineteen high school seniors from various schools around the Pikes Peak region are the first group to complete the Stroud Scholars college preparatory program at Colorado College, named after two of the first Black students to graduate from the institution in 1931. The scholars were honored at a college signing day event May 1 at Bemis Great Hall.
