File Restoration Policy

Your H: drive should be your primary network storage location; this location is secure and it is backed up nightly.

Backups occur nightly; therefore if a file is created and then deleted accidentally on the same day, it is not recoverable because it was never written to backup media.

Please be aware that any data you place on the temporary storage drive (\\fileserver\temp) is at risk - this network resource is only intended for temporary use in transferring large files, and is not intended to be secure and reliable storage. The drive is wiped clean on the Friday of each block break and is NOT backed up like other network resources (such as your H: drive, which should be your primary network storage location).

The following are the ITS policies for the timeframe in which you can expect your deleted file(s) to be restored:

  • Three weeks or newer: at least one hour, at most 48 hours
  • Less than one year old, older than three weeks: at least six hours, at most ten days
  • Older than one year: consult with ITS as it may take longer than three weeks and incur file retrieval costs

Due to resource limitations and circumstances that are impossible to predict, you can expect average restore times as follows:

  • Three weeks or newer: approximately four hours
  • Less than one year old, older than three weeks: approximately three business days
  • Older than one year: approximately 15 business days

Colorado College will make reasonable efforts to provide access to backed up computer files; however, the College makes no implied guarantee that access to backed up computer files will always be available.

When requesting a restore, please give us as much information as possible (ideally the name of the file and folder path, or as close as you can get. Example: 

  • H:\Work Documents\Printer RFP stuff\Xerox\Colorado College MPS - Xerox Responses\ MPS Invoice YTD.pdf
