Workshops
This Academic Year, C&I workshops are open to faculty from all Creative Courage Cohorts.
Each workshop builds upon frameworks learned during the immersions. Cohort members will practice exercises, place them in creativity theory, and discuss how they might be adapted for specific learning outcomes. Workshops also offer the cohort a chance to build community and collectively reflect on what is and is not working. The workshops will take place in Honnen 101.
Workshop Schedule
Block 2: Assessing Creative Assignments
In this session, we will share examples of assignments in various disciplines that highlight creative processes and present some options for assessment. If you have an assignment or assessment method you’d like to share, we welcome your participation in the session.
Presented by Kris Stanec and Jessica Hunter
Thursday, Oct. 8 from 2:30-3:30 p.m.
Block 3: Image-Making with Obsolete Press
Led by visiting artists Obsolete Press, this hands-on workshop will introduce cohort members to printing and other accessible analog image-making techniques such as one-page zine making. Designed to apply across disciplines, the workshop will emphasize low-barrier approaches that do not require artistic skills and can help students demonstrate course knowledge in creative, visual, and tactile ways. Participants will leave with a completed print/zine experiment, a how-to zine, and a “goodie bag” with the materials needed to recreate the process in their own classes.
Moderated by Makena Janssen and Kris Stanec
Tuesday, Oct. 27 from 1-2:30 p.m.
With thanks to the Department of Art for funding the Obsolete Press visit to CC.
Block 3: Countering Functional Fixedness
Functional fixedness describes the human tendency to zero in on a specific use for an object to the exclusion of other possibilities. This cognitive bias restricts our ability to creatively problem-solve. In this workshop, cohort members will practice strategies for countering functional fixedness in hands-on exercises, considering applications to their disciplines and teaching.
Presented by Evelina Fisher
Thursday, Nov. 5 from 12:15-1:30 p.m.
Block 4: Finding Spaciousness
Give yourself the gift of an hour that you don't fill with work. What kind of spaciousness can you create in this now unplanned hour? What possibilities can you explore that might put you in a positive place—physical or metaphorical? How can you stay open to whatever happens in that place? This is not a formal workshop and thus does not count toward the cohort completion requirement; instead, we see this practice as an act of self-compassion and invite you to take an hour to be creative in ways that bring you joy during this often busy time.
Thursday, Dec. 10
Block 5: Applying What We Have Learned So Far
In this session, cohort members will share what they have tried, what they want to try, what has succeeded, and what has not gone as planned. Together we will build an action plan for each participant to integrate a creative skill building activity or assignment into a future course.
Moderated by Jessica Hunter and Evelina Fisher
Thursday, Feb. 4, 2027 from 12:15-1:30 p.m
Block 6: Ten Questions
This problem-finding activity is designed to help us think through messy, ill-defined problems where the parameters aren't clearly specified, and the goal isn't clear. The Ten Questions exercise asks cohort members to practice using divergent and convergent thinking to generate multiple questions surrounding their problem, then choose the question that best fits what they want to explore.
Presented by Jessica Hunter
Thursday, March 4, 2027 from 2:30-3:30 p.m.
Block 7: Reflection and Documentation
In our final session, cohort members will reflect on takeaways, begin their documentation for stipend eligibility, and celebrate their time in the cohort.
Moderated by Jessica Hunter and Evelina Fisher
Thursday, April 8, 2027 from 12:15-1:30 p.m.
