Spiritual and Religious Accommodations
The Chaplain’s Office at Colorado College works with campus partners to support students’ spiritual and religious-based academic, dining, housing, and other practice-based needs. We encourage students to connect with us if they have questions or need support.
CC is a diverse community with many different spiritual and religious observances. As a residential college, dining and living together are factors that allow students to develop a sense of community. Finding ways to support students within the communal context is important to us. Focusing on supporting students holistically, we seek to make reasonable accommodations.
Academic Accommodations
The Chaplain’s Office recognizes a wide range of spiritual and religious observances, holy days, and others not formally recognized in the College academic calendar. We encourage you to talk with your professors well ahead of time, before the holiday, to communicate any accommodation needs and to arrange completion of all work. Specifically, it can be helpful to email your professor, as far ahead of time as possible, to 1) let them know that you will miss class for a religious observance, 2) ask what is needed to be prepared for the next class session, and 3) see if they will have notes available for you (if not, you could ask a classmate). When you return to class, it will be helpful to touch base with your professor to follow up on possible make-up assignments. You do not need to share the specific holiday you are observing, unless you want to.
- If you need support communicating with your professor or experience challenges in receiving academic accommodation for spiritual or religious observance, please contact Chaplain Kate Holbrook: kholbrook@coloradocollege.edu

Dining Accommodations
The Chaplain’s Office works with the College’s food provider, Bon Appetite, to meet religious dietary and nutritional needs. Many requests can be accommodated. If you believe your needs are not being met by the standard offerings, you can request a meal plan accommodation. It is very helpful to have direct conversations when making a request so that we can be the most helpful.
- Begin your request for religious dietary accommodation by talking in person or emailing Bon Appetite and/or the Chaplain’s Office.
- After you make you initial request, there will be a follow up meeting that will include a nutritionist from Bon Appetite and staff member of the Chaplain’s Office. Additional dining staff will be included as needed. Before this meeting, you may be asked to fill out an inquiry form.
- While the College will consider reasonable requests and accommodations, changes in a meal plan or meal plan exemption are typically granted if Bon Appetit is unable to fulfill the request.
- Once a decision is made regarding your meal plan accommodation, If you would like to appeal your decision, you can do so by contacting Associate Vice President Edwin Hamada: ehamada@coloradocollege.edu

Housing Accommodations
Housing requests based on spirituality and religion can be made during the yearly housing process in early February for the following fall and Nov. 1 for the spring semester. It is very important to follow the dates outlined by the Office of Housing & Residential Experience in order for your request to be processed within the designated time frame for requests. Submitting a request after the deadline, including during the active room selection process, will mean a delay in addressing your request until after the standard room selection process is complete.
Deadlines for spiritual and religious consideration are communicated by the Office of Housing and Residential Experience through an all-campus email. You can also find information closer to the time of housing selection on their website. If you have questions ahead of time, please reach out.
Please note that:
- Students whose housing requests have been approved in the past, must submit a new request each year.
- It is important to make a housing request before the deadline so it can be processed within the designated time frame for requests.
- Late requests will be considered starting May 1, after campus room assignments have been completed. If a request is approved at that time, it may mean being placed on a waiting list until an appropriate room becomes available.
- Students who are not granted a spiritual and religious housing request, or who choose not to accept their placement, should complete the standard room selection process through the Office of Housing & Residential Experience.
- For rising seniors: Seniors at CC are not guaranteed on-campus housing. Previous provision and approval of a housing request does not guarantee that a student will be permitted to live on campus as a senior. Rising seniors who believe they must live on campus for a spiritual or religious reason may make a request through the Chaplain's Office.
