Biographical Summary
Serapio M. Baca graduated from Colorado College in 1995 with a degree in Psychology. While at Colorado College, Serapio played four years of Varsity Soccer (3 NCAA Tournament appearances; One Final Four appearance) and participated in Track and Field. He obtained valuable research opportunities from the Associated Colleges of The Midwest Minority Scholar program as well as the Howard Hughes Biology Summer Program. He was a William Arthur Blakely Memorial Award recipient. He chose Colorado College after attending a National Science Foundation Program in Experimental Psychology as a junior in high school. He returned more than a decade later to teach a Senior Seminar course in the Psychology Department as a Visiting Professor.
Serapio completed his graduate work at the University of California at San Diego in the Neurosciences Program and received his PhD in 2005. For his thesis project, Serapio examined the role of inhibition in producing behavior and used kinematical, electrophysiological, and voltage-sensitive dye optical imaging methods to characterize the local bending response in the leech. Before completing his studies at UCSD, Serapio conducted research at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), testing agents that were developed to minimize motoric side effects (e.g., tardive dyskinesia) that arise from typical antipsychotics such as Haloperidol.
Serapio is presently a researcher in the Neurobiology Department at UCLA. He works in Dr. Jack Feldman's laboratory where researchers conduct both in vitro and in vivo studies to understand how respiration is controlled by brainstem centers. He lives in California with his wife and 18-month old son.
Advice to Current Students:
Regardless of Major or interests as an undergraduate, take advantage of your "protected time" so that you have the necessary foundation to pursue your passions in life. Take chances.

I have a Ph.D. in Neuroscience and a law degree. I work in the field of patent law at McCarter & English in Boston . I am married and have two children.
