How We’re Responding
- Colorado College has joined the Small Colleges Coalition, a group of more than two dozen colleges and universities across 17 states serving greater than 50,000 students. Together with these institutions, we are engaged in lobbying efforts to demonstrate the disproportionate impact the proposed endowment tax will have on small private colleges.
- On April 22, Interim President Whitaker was one of more than 200 college and university leaders to sign a letter published by the Association of American Colleges & Universities standing against government overreach in higher education.
- On April 30, two members of CC leadership visited Capitol Hill alongside other Coalition members, meeting with Congressional representatives to communicate the impact of college endowments, clarify misconceptions, and urge those with influence to oppose an increase to the tax, especially for schools with less than 5,000 students.
- On May 1, Interim President Whitaker and Board Chair Jeff Keller signed a similar letter published by the Association of Governing Boards of Colleges and Universities affirming the importance of institutional autonomy.
- We are modeling multiple financial planning scenarios, including potential losses of federal funding, to safeguard the student experience. As always, we prioritize increased operational efficiency and alternate revenue sources before making any programmatic changes that would impact our students and core academic mission.
- We continue to prioritize fundraising for financial aid, ensuring we can fulfill our commitment to access and opportunity regardless of federal changes.
- We are working closely with (and actively seeking more) alumni, parents and families, and other supporters who have experience or relationships in Washington, D.C., to help amplify our message.
