We need YOU as a volunteer mock trial judge!
Undergraduate mock trial students prepare for months and travel hundreds of miles to compete in this tournament. We have recruited local attorneys and judges to score every round of the tournament for many years, and we hope we can count on you to keep up the trend!
The volunteer service of qualified judges is essential to college mock trial. Your feedback and assessment is extremely valuable to the students.
If you have questions that are not answered here, please email Colorado College Mock Trial coach Taylor Kelson at tkelson@coloradocollege.edu.
What is the Regional mock trial tournament?
Colorado College and the United States Air Force Academy have again been selected to host the Colorado Springs Regional Tournament for the American Mock Trial Association. Twenty-four undergraduate mock trial teams from around Colorado and neighboring states will travel to Colorado Springs to compete in our tournament.
Who can volunteer as a judge?
All current and former/retired attorneys are eligible to serve as volunteer judges. You do not need to be a litigator, and you do not need any previous experience with mock trial.
CLE Credit:
A free 1-credit accredited CLE presentation will be provided to volunteer judges on Saturday and Sunday during lunch. Details on specific programs will provided when available.
Additionally, Colorado awards independent study CLE credit for attending "required training in preparation for serving as a judge or evaluator in a mock trial, moot court or client counseling competition, class, or program."
You may request these independent study credits by completing this form.
Meals:
Coffee and light breakfast will be provided for judges of morning rounds
Lunch will be provided for judges of afternoon rounds (and judges of morning rounds who are staying for the CLE presentation, whether or not judging the afternoon round).
Rounds/Schedule:
We need at least 24 volunteer judges for each of four rounds:
| Day: | Judges arrive: | Round: | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | Saturday, Feb. 21 | 8:15 am | 9:00 am – 12:00 pm |
| Round 2 | Saturday, Feb. 21 | 1:15 pm | 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm |

Case Problem:
The college students will be litigating a criminal case involving the death of a participant during a competition on a game show. College mock trial takes place in the fictional 51st state of Midlands.
You will receive training about the procedures of mock trial and about how to assess the students’ performance. The students will guide you through the conduct of the trial and the substance of the case.
You are not expected to review the case materials in advance. If you would like to review the case materials or the Rules of Evidence, please get in touch with the tournament organizers and we will be happy to provide them.
Parking:
Please park in the county parking structure at 255 Sahwatch St.
Please bring your ticket into the courthouse with you. All volunteer judges will receive a validation which will allow them to exit this parking structure for free.
If you are judge or employee of the courthouse, please park in your regularly assigned space.
The official contact person for each registered team will receive the tournament packet via email. The tournament packet includes additional information that is not publicly posted, including a link to the tournament GroupMe chat and contact information for other registered teams.
If you believe your team is missing the tournament packet, please contact: tkelson@coloradocollege.edu.
