The Sixties After the Sixties

The Sixties After the Sixties:
Music and Life at CC During the Early Block Plan Years

Thursday, Oct. 8
2-5 p.m.
CC Campus

The music we listen to becomes an integral part of our identity, especially during our college years. We gravitate towards bands and songs not only for how they sound, but for how they connect with the moment and place we are in.

In honor of the Class of ’76 50th Reunion, join Craig Werner ’74 for The Sixties After the Sixties: Music and Life at CC During the Early Block Plan Years on Thursday, Oct. 8.

Through three immersive, one-hour sessions you’ll take an in-depth look at the music from the 1960s. Built around songs popular during the class of '76’s time on campus, these sessions reflect on the ways the battle over the meaning of the sixties took shape while the memories were still fresh.

Werner’s engaging, discussion-driven approach invites audience discourse organized around the idea of “call and response” blending music, insight, and shared reflection for an immersive experience that will take participants back to their student days exploring intellectual curiosity with peers.

Werner brings decades of experience examining the cultural and lived experiences of music. He served on the Nominating Committee of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for two decades and spent over 30 years on the faculty of the Department of Afro-American Studies and the Critical Thinking program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He developed a teaching style heavily influenced by his CC experience that provided the base of many public presentations, NPR radio programs, and his books A Change Is Gonna Come: Musical Race & the Soul of America (the London-based Mojo magazine's 2000 book-of-the-year) and We Gotta Get Out of This Place: The Soundtrack of Vietnam (Rolling Stone's 2015 book-of-the-year).

A Spotify playlist of music selections for the presentations will be available for attendees in advance.

Back-to-back sessions will begin at 2 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m. Come for one, two, or stay for all three!

This event is open to all Homecoming attendees and CC faculty, staff, and students.
