What was your experience at CC studying film?
At CC, I studied English with a film concentration, which allowed me to learn about both film analysis and filmmaking. I took courses ranging from Basic & Advanced Filmmaking, Screenwriting, and Directing to Film History Theory and Shakespeare in Film. During my senior year, I took a block in LA with the Hollywood course. I had the chance to meet and hear from alums that were directors, producers, agents, and actors, and attended screenings and Q&As with agencies/studios. One of the assignments in the Hollywood class was to pick a concentration, and I chose casting. I still remember cold-calling different casting directors for a research paper, and how much that informed my career path. Dylan Nelson (one of my professors from that class) recently sent me that paper, and it was surreal reading it back 15 years later!
Why were you interested in focusing on film at CC?
I grew up watching so many movies and wanted to study film in some capacity. Since I wasn’t certain what aspect of filmmaking to focus on, the thought of going to a traditional film school was a little daunting. I ultimately chose CC because I wanted the freedom of a liberal arts education coupled with a strong film program with a variety of film courses.
How are you using your major in your post-CC life?
Very fortunately, I’ve been able to work in entertainment since I graduated. I moved out to LA a month after graduation and was able to get a job in talent management before landing my first casting assistant job. I worked my way up as an associate, then casting director, and now have a casting company, CL/CK. I’m truly so grateful to CC for preparing me, and the Block Plan very much taught me how to work under truncated deadlines! Beyond the classroom, I’ve stayed friends with and collaborated with fellow CC film alums. It’s really wonderful to see how much the film program has evolved since I graduated, and I’m excited to see what's to come for its future.
