This is a two-part, story-based workshop on money, identity, and collective power, featuring CC alumni Susanna Penfield (Political Science/Feminist & Gender Studies ’20) and Jacqueline Nkhonjera (Political Science ’20). These sessions will invite participants to consider ways to deepen relationships across class differences, take action to address wealth inequity, and engage in systemic change at the individual, interpersonal, and institutional levels. Discover the many paths an education degree can open up, the versatile skills that translate across industries, and how you can start exploring opportunities that align with your interests and goals.Panelist Bios:Aubrey Skeeter, '19Aubrey Skeeter, whose Yuchi name is zOdAê aKAê, graduated from Colorado College in 2019 and returned home to Oklahoma to work within her community. She currently serves as a preschool teacher at the Yuchi Immersion School, part of the Yuchi Language Project. The Yuchi language is an endangered Indigenous language that is not widely spoken within the Yuchi community, but it is currently undergoing significant revitalization efforts. Aubrey has been learning the Yuchi language since 2016 and is now a mother to a two-year-old son, whom she has been speaking Yuchi to since his birth. Summer Ardell: '19 Summer Ardell is a Chicago-based attorney who focuses on the special educational, civil, and human rights of K-12, transition aged, and post-secondary students. She began working at highly specialized schools for youth with complex disabilities in 2016 and taught at a therapeutic boarding school for teens with serious mental illnesses upon graduating from CC. She graduated suma cum laude from Loyola Law School in 2023 and has been working at Hansen & Cleary ever since. Most of her work focuses on assisting children and teens with complex disabilities, including developmental disabilities, serious mental illnesses, and learning disabilities gain access to supports, services, and specialized placements through their IEP. Summer also works with students of all ages to help them gain access to accommodations, address bullying/harassment concerns, respond to school discipline issues, and resolve instances of discrimination in public and private schools, as well as post-secondary institutions. Her lifelong passion for Disability advocacy stems from her lived experience with Dyslexia and is further inspired by her mother’s work with youth with Cerebral Palsy.Alie Ehrensaft: '12 BA, education minor. Chris Schacht, Director Writing CenterWriting an abstract for a research project is a complicated rhetorical task that masquerades as a simple one. How do you transform a lengthy written project or weeks of research into a brief and intelligible synopsis of your work? In this workshop, we will define the role and generic features of an abstract. Then participants will draft and workshop abstracts of their research. By the end of this session, participants should have a solid working draft of an abstract to incorporate into their posters for the Undergraduate Research Symposium.
