Guidelines for Academic Program Proposals
The proposal of new academic programs (major/minor) is a two-tier process.
Stage One
Stage one should begin with a Letter of Intent that offers a brief overview of the proposed program, a rationale of why it is needed and its relevance to a Liberal Arts education. The Letter of intent should not exceed two pages. This letter should be submitted simultaneously to the CEC and the Dean of the Faculty.
You can expect to receive feedback within 6 weeks of submission. If feedback is positive, you will be approved to continue to stage two of the process.
Stage Two
In stage two we require a more detailed document (please note this should only be submitted after approval of the stage one, Letter of Intent). This document should also be submitted to both the CEC and the Dean of the Faculty. In this document, please address the following items:
- A detailed description of the major/minor that includes the purpose and goals of the new program.
A detailed list of the course requirements of the new program, and total number of units including pre-requisites. Please refer to the following page for the policy on program units: All-College Degree Requirements - A time line with proposed initiation of the program along with a two-year schedule. Make sure to indicate which courses are already in existence and which would be new. Provide the names of the faculty members that would participate as instructors and would act as advisors to the program.
- Staffing, library, and IT resources needed or physical space necessities to run the program.
- Potential impact on preexistent majors and minors.
You will receive feedback on this second stage within 8 weeks of submission.
