The Beinecke Scholarship
Description
College juniors with an interest in pursuing graduate work in the humanities or humanistic social-sciences are encouraged to apply for The Beinecke Scholarship Program. This award was established in 1971 by the Board of Directors of The Sperry and Hutchinson Company to honor Edwin, Frederick, and Walter Beinecke. The Board created an endowment to provide substantial scholarships for the graduate education of young men and women of exceptional promise who are pursuing the arts, humanities, and social sciences. In many respects, this is an ideal award for students that wish to explore the possibility of attending graduate school because it is not tied to a particular program of study and provides a stipend to help students with the application process.
Students must have a documented history of receiving need-based financial aid during his or her undergraduate years. There are no geographic restrictions on the use of the scholarship, and recipients are allowed to supplement the award with other scholarships, assistantships and research grants. Scholars are encouraged to begin graduated study as soon as possible following graduation from college, and must utilize all of the funding within five years of completion of undergraduate studies.
Award
Approximately 20 Beinecke Scholars selected from more than 100 different undergraduate institutions are awarded each year.
Each Scholar receives:
- $4,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school
- An additional $30,000 while attending graduate school.
Internal Deadline
2nd Friday of Block 4
Please consult with the campus advisor well in advance of this deadline. Colorado College will select the strongest internal applicant for nomination to the national Beinecke Scholarship committee.
