India - DA230/TH230: Performance Away

DA230/TH230: Performance Away
Kochi & Pondicherry, India
Last Offered in Fall 2024
This course introduces students to dynamic contemporary arts scenes in India. Scheduled around the Kochi Biennale – Asia’s largest interdisciplinary contemporary arts festival – as well as a residency with a contemporary theater company or traditional performance institution, this course centers live, embodied experience, to expose students to a world of artists, interdisciplinary art work and the critical questions they are asking through their work. Beyond traditional western discourses about South Asian art as stuck between tradition and contemporaneity, this class contextualizes the politics of post/coloniality, longue duree oceanic connections, and social histories in the subcontinent which frame the work of artists and the festivals we attend. While focused on embodied arts and performance, this course centrally engages with visual and installation arts, and textile crafts.
