From structure and aesthetics to philosophical approaches and environmental topics, this course will ask how a region can shape its literary landscapes. In particular, we will read texts by Native America writers from and about the Southwest to better understand regional issues within specific tribes and tribal histories. This is a discussion-based course with writing assignments, visual presentations, and visiting speakers.

This course explores music and cultural belonging in the contemporary American Southwest, and the many interweaving forms of music-making across the region. We will examine how tapestries of ethnicity and cultural identity are crafted, reflected, negotiated, and altered through musical expression. Our investigation will consider processes of settler- colonialism that have contributed to waves of migration across the region, and the forms of musical practice that have emerged from, and shaped, these processes. We will focus on various genres that comprise the musical fabric of the region, including modern Latin pop, Pueblo music, Mariachi, Hispanic folk music, Navajo country, Ranchera, Flamenco, Tejano, and Indigenous rock, and will explore the relationship of landscape with identity and musical practice among local musicians. 1 unit - Carrizo

he presence of Latinxs has heavily influenced U.S. Southwest language and culture. This can be seen in our day to day through food, music, buildings, and street names. Additionally, language has been in the forefront of identity, cultural pride, and empowerment. This course will survey an array of cultural productions to evaluate how have Latinxs engage and overcome linguistic adversities. The course culminates with a digital humanities project centered on Latinxs in Colorado.

Reading, reading: this is a course about reading focused on the contemporary literature of the Southwest, in the form of two works of imaginative nonfiction, four novels, and assorted shorter works I will hand out and/or assign during the block. The Southwest you will experience is one projected through the creative lenses of writers and novelists and film directors, essayists, poets, in imaginative interpretations of history and political and personal dramas of our era.

This course offers a critical exploration of Indigenous and Black presence across seas. We will maintain a transnational, transatlantic perspective throughout the course, focusing on the narratives and discourses created by Indigenous and Black peoples from the moment of contact to the present. What have been some of the representations of Indigenous and Black peoples in the Iberian Peninsula, the Americas, and Africa? How have Indigenous and Black peoples countered and resisted dominant narratives? We will survey a wide range of cultural and literary works such as film, photography, hip/hop/rap music, poetry, short stories, letters, and textiles, to gain a better understanding of the ways Indigenous and Black media makers have and are reaching a wider audience with their works. Students will have the opportunity to engage in conversations on issues of representation, resistance, trauma, movement, displacement, and violence to name a few. We will center Indigenous and Black voices that challenge, create, and respond to dominant monolithic viewpoints.

In addition to close attention to the contributions and problems of archaeological practices, we learn from the words, voices, and places of Indigenous peoples of the region. This course exposes students to the (1) complex and sophisticated organizations of tribal governments in the US, (2) productive work these sovereign nations do for their citizens and other Indigenous people who live within their political jurisdictions, or (3) contributions of tribal nations to the economic and social vibrancy of the states in which they are located. Using a multidisciplinary approach, students will examine the fundamental differences between Native and non-Native worldviews with respect to assumptions relating to governance, cultural positions, and spiritual connections for right of use and occupancy of land and economic pursuit. Provides students will several off-campus opportunities to learn and interact with leaders, citizens, businesses, programs, and cultures of one or more federally recognized tribal nations. Students will also engage in cultural activities and language activities. Prerequisite: RM185 or RM251 or any introductory REMS, SWS, or SOC course or consent of instructor.
