Rushaan Kumar joined the Feminist and Gender Studies faculty as Assistant Professor in 2017. He received his PhD in Feminist Studies from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and previously taught at Carleton College, Minnesota and Pomona College, California. His teaching and research interests are transnational gender and sexuality, critical trans/masculinity studies, postcolonial media, public culture, and queer social movements in India and the South Asian diaspora. His current projects examine the simultaneous impact of globalization and Hindu majoritarian nationalism on transgender Indians’ contestations over cultural citizenship.
Professor Kumar is the founder and coordinator of the Colorado Springs LGBTQ+ Oral History Project, which was recognized by the College’s 2020-2021 Community-Engaged Research Award. He is a board member of the Society for Queer Asian Studies (SQAS), an affiliate of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS).
