Michaël Bonnal is a distinguished economist and academic who possesses a global perspective, shaped by his education in France, the UK, and the US. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Economics from The University of Alabama, an M.B.A. from The University of Louisiana Monroe, and B.A. and M.A. degrees in Economics from the University of Paris Gustave Eiffel and Leeds University Business School.
Dr. Bonnal has served as an Economist Consultant, applying his expertise to real-world economic challenges. Before joining Colorado College, his academic career included roles as Associate Professor of Economics at the Gary Rollins College of Business of The University of Tennessee Chattanooga (UTC), Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Paris PSL, and Research Associate at the University of Alabama Center for Business and Economic Research.
Dr. Bonnal's teaching spans core economic principles, intermediate microeconomics and macroeconomics courses, and specialized courses like Labor Economics, Game Theory, Economic Growth and Sustainable Development, and Managerial Economics. His extensive research, published in journals such as Review of Development Economics, Journal of Labor Research, Journal of Entrepreneurship, Global Business and Economic Review, Journal of International Trade and Economic Development, Emerging Markets Finance and Trade, Review of Regional Studies, and Public Integrity, focuses on areas including corruption, growth and development, labor, and social issues.
Some of Dr. Bonnal’s ongoing research focuses on understanding and addressing social and economic disparities and their impacts across various domains: poverty and bias reduction, racism reduction strategy via localized history tours, gender and race wage disparities in academia, and the economic impact of COVID-19 deaths. Other ongoing research explores the relationship between political institutions, technological progress, and labor standards.
A dedicated contributor to the academic community, Dr. Bonnal has held leadership positions in professional associations, served on editorial boards, and actively participated in numerous university committees, including those focused on diversity and inclusion. His efforts have been recognized with various grants and awards, including the UTC Outstanding Teaching in General Education Award, the UC Foundation professorship, and the UTC Henry Hart Professorship.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Dr. Bonnal currently resides in Denver, Colorado, where he enjoys cuisine, gardening, hiking, and cherishing time with his children, family, and friends.
