Environmental Program

Mike Angstadt teaches and researches at the nexus of environmental law and environmental politics. Motivated by urgent governance challenges including climate change, he explores (1) how domestic courts and nonstate actors influence the development of international environmental law, (2) how judges and courts can promote procedural environmental justice and environmental protection, (3) how we can reimagine environmental law to better address systemic environmental challenges, and (4) how the disciplines and theories of international environmental law and global environmental politics can speak meaningfully to one another. 

Mike's work at Colorado College reflects his academic training, practitioner experience, and commitment to practice-relevance and interdisciplinary engagement. He holds a JD with certificates in environmental and international law from Pace University School of Law, and he completed a PhD in Environmental Politics and NSF IGERT traineeship at Colorado State University. Mike is a research fellow with the Earth System Governance research alliance, a member of the Steering Committee for the Task Force on Earth System Law, a member of the IUCN's World Commission on Environmental Law, and a member (inactive retired) of the New Hampshire Bar. He was delighted to join the Colorado College community in fall 2019, where his teaching includes "US Environmental Law & Policy," "Global Environmental Policy," and an applied research workshop examining climate change litigation.
