Accelerated Portuguese Abroad is the study of elementary Portuguese language and Brazilian culture in Bahia. The course will use contextual-based learning, cultural immersion, home stays, a trip to the island of Morro de São Paulo and to the interior national park in Lençóis. These different cultural experiences are meant to teach students regionally specific vocabulary, communication techniques, and cultural content from northeastern Brazil.

Accelerated Portuguese Abroad" is the study of elementary Portuguese language and introduction to Brazilian culture in Bahia, Brazil. This course includes the study of elementary & intermediate Portuguese language and an introduction to Brazilian culture, with an emphasis on Afro-Brazilian traditions situated in the city of Salvador. Students will gain regionally specific vocabulary, communication techniques, and cultural content from northeastern Brazil. Students will participate in language study at one of two levels depending on prior coursework and the number of students enrolled in the program. This course will follow the CC Spanish & Portuguese Department's communicative method of teaching which emphasizes contextual-based learning and cultural immersion. Through accelerated language study in the four modalities—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—and home stays with Brazilian families, students will acquire an intermediate- to advanced-level in Brazilian Portuguese. In addition, students will travel to the neighboring island of Morro de São Paulo and to the interior national park in Lençóis among other local field trips within the city of Salvador.
