The study of symmetry from a mathematical perspective. Symmetry groups of bounded figures, frieze patterns and wallpaper patterns in the Euclidean plane will be classified using the Mosaics, tiling, art, and architecture in Southern Spain as motivation. Course Fee: $4,500

When information is stored or transmitted, mistakes can and do happen. Error-correcting codes are methods of encoding our precious information so that those mistakes can be fixed. This course will introduce digital codes, basic bounds, Hamming codes, Reed-Solomon codes, Reed-Muller codes, decoding algorithms, and other topics. Error-correcting codes are beautiful objects from the perspective of pure mathematics but also have vital applications in computing and connections to cryptography. Coding theory connects researchers in math, computer science, and electrical engineering, and this course is appropriate for students with any of these interests.
