HY252 - Magic, Science, and Religion in the Mediterranean

How have science and religion come to be seen as such different enterprises? What role has the charge of 'magic' played in setting boundaries between communities as they sought to understand both the workings of the natural world and spiritual revelation? This course examines the intertwined histories of what we now call magic, science, and religion, through Babylonian, Hebrew, Greek, Arabic, and Latin sources, from the ancient through the early modern periods.
