Stuart Hall asks in the title of a classic 1993 essay, “What is this ‘Black’ in Black Popular Culture?”. Building from foundational texts that seek to define the Africana aesthetic, this course will examine the variety of aesthetic practices—sonic, visual, written, culinary, etc.—that make up Africana expressive culture.
