Occasionally, one person’s ambitious vision spurs real change. President Richard F. Celeste’s goal for alumni to conduct 500 admission interviews a year by 2010 has prompted Colorado College to begin training volunteers in six cities: Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Minneapolis, and Colorado Springs. To invigorate this process, Addison Diehl ’91, Jennifer Phelps ’93 (assistant director, admission), and Karrie Williams P’09 (director, alumni relations) reorganized the Alumni Association Board’s Admission Committee to support the new face of the college’s admission process. The importance of this effort was evident when Jennifer and I attended the Annapolis Institute, a think tank of college admission experts. We went to pick their brains about how best to facilitate alumni involvement in admission interviews. Instead, we found them picking ours!
But we didn't leave empty-handed. We learned that: 1) size matters — parents and students looking at small, private liberal arts colleges expect individualized attention; 2) CC is ahead of the curve in increasing ethnic diversity; 3) CC needs to “get ’em while they’re young” — i.e., future alumni volunteers must be recruited before they graduate; 4) collaboration is key — the CC community tangibly benefits from alumni and staff working together; and 5) the college needs your help in conducting applicant interviews if you live in one of these metropolitan areas! Please contact aar@ColoradoCollege.edu to learn more about training opportunities.
Help CC students find opportunity on the front lines of a changing world. |
