Lisa Hughes
Adjunct Associate Professor
As a classicist, my primary interest is the classical tradition in American culture, especially literature and film. I teach courses that reflect the enduring influence of the ancient Greeks, in classes as varied as The King James Bible, Myth and Movies, and Shakespeare's Ovid. I continue to enjoy taking Colorado College students to Greece for courses on Homer, Greek drama, and Greek romanticism. My recent academic publications and presentations include a study of Greek myth in Nella Larsen, a writer in the Harlem Renaissance; and Greece as a site of comedy from ancient Rome to the contemporary American cinema. I also enjoy making the classics come to life for popular audiences, in presentations such as "Understanding Homer's Odyssey with Wine" and “Frosty, the Grinch, and the Cambridge Ritualists” . I don't have any pets. It's not that I hate animals, exactly, it's simply that I was not raised with them, and prefer not to have them in the house. I am quite fond of the sound of goatbells in the distance.
