Colorado College will host a symposium during the 2006-2007 academic year on the dynamics of religion and public life in the United States. The symposium will provide opportunities to consider, discuss, and debate the various ways that religion and our public lives intersect and influence one another. CC will invite scholars, politicians and political advisors, artists, scientists, religious leaders, and journalists from differing perspectives to engage this topic.
The highlight of the symposium will fall on Oct. 18-20, 2006, when the college hosts several nationally respected visitors to speak and perform on campus. The topics they address may include: religion and presidential rhetoric, public policy and private life, religious pluralism and democratic values, and religion and science. Other guests and programs will enhance discussions on these and related issues throughout the year.
Confirmed speakers include: Gary Hart, author of “God and Caesar in America: An Essay on Religion and Politics,” and former presidential candidate; Robert Bellah, Elliott Professor of Sociology, emeritus, University of California-Berkeley; Stanley Fish, professor, University of Illinois-Chicago; Linell Cady, professor, Arizona State University; Amy Sullivan, editor, Washington Monthly; Suzanne Holland, associate professor, University of Puget Sound; Laurie Zoloth, professor of medical humanities and bioethics, and of religion, at Northwestern University; Ted Haggard, pastor, New Life Church, Colorado Springs; George Tinker, Iliff University.
