Alumni, Faculty Build on Block Plan Successes

35 Years: The Colorado College Plan Celebration of the 35th anniversary of the unique Colorado College Plan is underway! During the 2005-06 academic year, the CC community is reflecting on the CC Plan and its most well-known component, the Block Plan.

Over Homecoming Weekend, alumni and faculty who were deeply involved in the early years of The Colorado College Plan were on campus to discuss how the college could build on something that was already very good. Read more about Homecoming in College News, and watch a half-hour video of this discussion at www.ColoradoCollege.edu/35.

In November, CC’s student debate team took on the University of California-Berkeley and debated the topic: “Resolved: That the Semester System is Superior to the Colorado College Block Plan.” Naturally, CC won! Students are planning other celebratory events throughout the year, including a 70s dance and much more.

Filmmaker Doug Pray ’83, with the assistance of Lasse Jarvi ’03 and Alex Chu ’03,is currently working on a short documentary film exploring a day in the life of three current students, which will be used to promote the college.

Throughout the year, faculty will reassess the most effective teaching and planning techniques under the Block Plan. The college will use a grant from the Teagle Foundation to examine how we use and make the most of the Block Plan: what works well, effective teaching strategies, cross blocks, and opportunities beyond the block. In addition, CC will add to the college’s oral history records with histories taken from many of those who helped create and develop the plan.

For the capstone event, CC will host a symposium: “Religion and Public Life: Why Be Afraid?” The symposium will provide opportunities to consider, discuss, and debate the various ways that religion and our public life intersect and influence one another. The college will invite scholars, politicians and political advisors, artists, scientists, religious leaders, and journalists from differing perspectives to engage each other on this topic. The highlight of the symposium will fall on Oct. 18-20, 2006, when the college will host several nationally respected visitors who will speak and perform on campus. Topics they may address include: religion and presidential rhetoric, public policy and private life, religious pluralism and democratic values, and religion and science. Other guests and programs will enhance discussions on these and related issues throughout the year.
