Performing
runs in the family for Miguel Romero ’00. Throughout
his childhood, he recalls, his family engaged in lively
storytelling that stretched into the evenings. When
Romero began to share his own stories at family occasions,
his poise and comfort in the family spotlight were
unmistakable.
Eventually, his passion for “story” led
to a drama major at CC. “I was in plays in high
school, but I didn’t really discover theater
until I went to Colorado College,” he says.
At CC, Romero starred in such plays as “Standup
Tragedy” and “The Birthday Party.”
For his senior project, he wrote, directed, and performed
in a solo performance piece about the Chicano experience
in Vietnam. Called “I Remember,” the piece
was a meditation on his father’s war experiences.
“When veterans from disenfranchised communities
returned home, their service to their country didn’t
suddenly earn them civil rights,” says Romero.
“The structural injustices that were in place
before they left remained.”
Romero lives in Seattle with his wife, Heather ’00,
and plays guitar in a comedic duo called “FleaDog.”
He is a principal actor in the sketch comedy troupe
“The Night Shift,” which has just produced
a 90-minute movie called “Muffled by Pastry.”

Improv Festival, the Chicago Sketchfest, or www.gadzookfilms.com.
When Romero’s not “doing comedy,”
he is studying for his master of divinity at Fuller
Theological Seminary. Romero says his progression
from theater to theology was unexpected but organic:
“Both theater and theology are, at their cores,
disciplines in service and search of truth.”
