Bethel Crumbaker Schneebeck ’38, Tacoma, Wash., May 16. Bethel was a humanitarian and philanthropist. She served on the boards of numerous organizations in the Tacoma area and was the recipient of many awards and honors for her years of service and dedication.

Jean Wilson Tinney ’38, Colorado Springs, Aug. 7. Jean was a teacher. She was a member of the Friends of the Library and the Woman’s Educational Society. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Tinney ’40.

Leonard Bernstein ’47, Colorado Springs, Aug. 10. Leonard was a clinical psychologist with Colorado Springs Health Partners for 24 years. Survivors include his wife, Patricia.

Cornelia Manley Sabine ’49 (MA ’50), Colorado Springs, Aug. 20. Cornelia had a long and distinguished career as a psychologist until her retirement in 1993. She was a charter member of the El Paso County Psychological Society, and in 1980 received an award for outstanding contributions to psychology. The award then became an annual award, named in her honor. Cornelia created the Sabine Endowed Fund for the Colorado College psychology department to support many of its projects, equipment, and activities. For a number of years, she also generously gave her time to meet with psychology classes at CC to share her experiences as an “elder” and as a psychologist. She advised students to use their knowledge of psychology to bring peace and understanding into relationships in our fractious modern world. In recognition of Cornelia’s many contributions to psychology and the college, the department named its annual award for the outstanding graduating psychology major the Cornelia Manley Sabine Award.

Karol Kennedy Kucher ’52, Seattle, June 25. As a U.S. skating champion, Karol paired with her brother Peter to win the gold medal at the 1950 world figure-skating championships and a silver medal at the 1952 Winter Olympics. Farrell B. “Chief” Howell ’64, Lakewood, Colo., July 24. Farrell was a hereditary chief in the Pawnee tribe. A resolution passed by the Council of the City and County of Denver recognized “Dr. Farrell Howell’s dedication to youth and his significant role in history as Denver Public Schools’ first American Indian principal.” He served on numerous community boards and spent his life as an advocate of youth as well as a teacher, coach, administrator, and role model. Survivors include his wife, Beverly Carrington Howell ’65.

Nathanial A. Pollack (MA ’72), San Diego, May 24. Nathanial was a rabbi who held pulpits in a number of cities. In the mid-1980s, he was appointed the Jewish chaplain at the R.J. Donovan Correctional State Facility prison, where he served until his death. Survivors include his wife, Shirley.

John A. Auffrey ’82, Monrovia, Liberia, May 24. John worked for the Department of Defense. He was part of a U.S. military team sent to Liberia on May 19 to carry out an assessment of the Armed Forces of Liberia. He was killed in his hotel room during an apparent robbery attempt. Survivors include his wife, Helena Brandt.
