Harriette Garstin Loshbaugh ’20, Grand Junction, Colo., Sept. 16, 2002. Before her retirement, Harriette worked as a teacher and librarian for the Rifle School District for 23 years.

Margaret Smith Barnett ’26, Walnut Creek, Calif., July 28. Margaret did bookkeeping for her husband Frank’s business, Barnett Office Equipment Co., until his death in 1980. She was a member of the Fifty Year Club. Survivors include her daughter Ruth Barnett Lyle ’59.

Claudine Sellers Heinicke ’28, Seaford, Del., Aug. 27. Claudine worked for the American Red Cross and was a member of the Fifty Year Club, the Woman’s Educational Society, and the Friends of the Library at CC. Survivors include her daughter Elizabeth Shivers Newburn ’58 and her nephew Andrew Jovanovich ’65. She was preceded in death by her first husband, George Shivers ’26, and her second husband, Alfred Heinicke ’35.

Susan Sandford Manly ’28, Shelburne, Vt., Jan. 2, 2003. Beginning in 1952, Susan held various positions at Tufts University until her retirement in 1971. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Thomas Sandford ’26 and John Sandford ’31.

Evelyn Stubblefield Cass ’30, Lakewood, Colo., July 15. Evelyn was a retired educator. She was a member of the Woman’s Educational Society and Friends of the Library at CC. Survivors include her sister-in-law Sara Anthony Stubblefield ’44.

Genevieve Engel Cogan ’31, Jacksonville, Fla., July 21, 2002. Genevieve was a professional musician. She was a class agent and a member of the Barnes Society at CC. Survivors include her husband Jerry. She was preceded in death by her sister Harriet Engel Anderson ’35.

Edward H. Mason ’32, Fort Collins, Colo., May 21. Edward spent 31 years with the U.S. Forest Service before retiring in 1963. Survivors include his aunt Sarah Mason Sprenger ’27. He was preceded in death by his brother William ’29 and his uncle Milton Sprenger ’30.

Constance Postlethwaite Murray ’32, Colorado Springs, June 4. Connie was an active member of the Fifty Year Club and served on the board of the Friends of the Library. In 1986, CC presented her with the Lloyd E. Worner Award for service to the college. Her father, W.W. Postlethwaite, was CC’s treasurer from 1911-1940 and a legendary director of the CC Museum. Survivors include her niece Debora Greiner Samaniego ’53. She was preceded in death by her sister Isabel Postlethwaite Greiner ’25 and her husband Joseph Murray ’33.

Carl V. Burke ’33, Virginia Beach, Va., July 26. Carl was a WWII veteran and retired with the rank of colonel in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps in 1965. Survivors include his wife of 70 years Virginia Dailey Burke ’32.

Lewis E. January ’33, Iowa City, Iowa, Oct. 8, 2002. Lewis was professor emeritus of the college of medicine at the University of Iowa. He received an honorary degree from CC in 1966. Survivors include his wife Eloise.

R. Merritt Ritter ’34, Merced, Calif., Feb. 4. Survivors include his wife Virginia.

Lillian Walberg Handke
’35, Colorado Springs, Sept. 3. Lillian was an active member of the Fifty Year Club, and served as its recording secretary from 1987-89. Survivors include her husband Fred Handke ’34, her sister Helen Walberg Gilbert ’42, her brother Richard Walberg ’46, her daughter Margaretta Handke ’69, and her son-in-law Leigh Pomeroy ’70. She was preceded in death by her sister Genevieve Walberg Schaefer ’39, her brother John Walberg ’45, and her daughter Christine ’73.

Dorothy L. Lagerborg ’35 (MA ’37), Long Beach, Calif., April 27. Dorothy was retired from the California Department of Public Health. Survivors include her cousin Alexander Lagerborg ’69. She was preceded in death by her cousin Vincent Lagerborg ’48.
Catherine Corning Packard ’36, Silver Spring, Md., Jan. 31. Catherine was the founder and director of the Rockville Nursery School until her retirement in 1974. Survivors include her brother Hobart Corning Jr. ’37.

Charles K. Riddoch ’36, Colorado Springs, Aug. 16. Keith retired from the First National Bank in 1980 after 42 years as a vice president and trust officer. Survivors include his brother Leland ’40. He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Barrie Riddoch ’36.

Mary Barkalow Joyce ’38, Denver, April 24. Mary was a member of the Barnes Society, the Woman’s Educational Society, Friends of the Library at CC, and served as a class agent at the college. Survivors include her cousin Rosalie Johnson Mow ’51, her grandson Geoffrey Chadwick ’88, and her granddaughter Bonnie Chadwick ’90. She was preceded in death by her sister Jeanie Barkalow Robinson ’40.

Mary Ella Gilmore Magnusson ’38, Missoula, Mont., Nov. 4, 2002. In addition to helping her husband run his veterinary practice, Mary Ella practiced nursing and was a retired nursing home administrator. Survivors include her husband Arthur and their six children. Her father, Ralph J. Gilmore, was a popular biology professor at CC and was the founder of the famed Water Dog Club. The family has established The Mary Ella Gilmore Magnusson and Prof. Ralph Gilmore Family Fund, which will support a program area within biology. Memorial donations may be made to this fund, which honors the legacy of Mary Ella and her father’s commitment to CC and the sciences. Harold M. Whitney ’38, Colorado Springs, Aug. 6. After working 10 years as a meteorologist, Harold joined his parents and brother in the family business, Whitney Electric. “Hal” was active in the Fifty Year Club. Survivors include his daughter-in-law Penny Norton Whitney ’69. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Nollenberger Whitney ’40.

Helen Willie Davis ’40, Manitou Springs, Colo., April 28. Survivors include her son-in-law Harold Klausner ’80. She was preceded in death by her husband Homer Davis ’42 and her brother Henry Willie ’33.

Dorothy Teason Burke ’41, Kingston, Mass., Feb. 10. Dorothy was a retired medical technologist. She was a career volunteer at CC and a member of the Woman’s Educational Society. Survivors include her cousins, Ruth Teason Bailey ’43 and Donald Teason ’51; cousin-in-law Ruth Phillips Teason ’51; and grandson Michael Ackil ’99. She was preceded in death by her mother Ramona Carrick Barr ’20, her cousin Hugh Teason ’42, and her sister Ramona Teason ’43.

John R. Neill ’41, Bixby, Okla., Dec. 20, 2002. Survivors include his wife Ligia and his brother Charles ’52.

James M. Wiley ’41, Colorado Springs, May 23. James owned Wiley Real Estate and dealt in antiques.

Robert S. Herrmann ’42, Pueblo, Colo., Aug. 24. Bob served in the Navy from 1942-1968. He then served as assistant superintendent at the Colorado State Hospital until 1982. Survivors include his wife Betty Ann, son Robert C. ’68, and nieces, Jill Herrmann Warner ’72 and Kit Herrmann Bazley ’76.

Melvin A. Johnson ’42, Denver, April 16. Melvin was in private practice in internal medicine for 31 years, as well as serving on the staffs of the University of Colorado Medical Center and Rose and Mercy Hospitals. He is survived by his wife Judy Harrell Johnson ’43, his daughters Joan Johnson Mast-Loughridge ’70 and Annie Johnson-Goodwin, and his son Stephen.

John E. Walberg ’45, Denver, Aug. 25. John was a retired attorney. Survivors include his wife Floy, his sister Helen Walberg Gilbert ’42, and his brother Richard ’46. Judith Ronning Danforth ’52, Francestown, N.H., March 20. Judith taught for 24 years at the Reeds Ferry Elementary School in Merrimack, N.H., before retiring in 1998.

James F. Barnes ’53, Edmond, Okla., Jan. 27, 2003. James retired in 1984 as president of K & J Imports in San Clemente, Calif. James was a member of the Barnes Society at the college.

Barbara Hogan Child ’54, Colorado Springs, Sept. 1. Barbara was a retired teacher for School District #11 in Colorado Springs. Survivors include her husband Howard Child ’55 and her brother-in-law John Child ’39. She was preceded in death by her mother Dorothy Hodgkinson Hogan ’27.

George J. Clam ’54, Plainfield, Ill., June 20. George bought land and transformed it into Chicago’s Harbor Point and Belvidere’s Chrysler Plant. Survivors include his wife Ann, five children, and 12 grandchildren.

Duncan M. Eyre ’56, Colorado Springs, May 28. Duncan was a master silversmith and artist with work represented in galleries around the U.S. He also taught silversmithing at Pikes Peak Community College. Survivors include his wife Diane.

James M. Elliott ’58, Tewksbury, Mass., Nov. 11, 2002. James was a member of the college’s 1955 NCAA championship hockey team and was an avid sportsman.

Thomas J. Halloran ’58, Springfield, Ohio, Dec. 28, 2002. Thomas was employed by the Springfield News-Sunday and the Dayton Daily News for many years.

Margaret Merriman Johnson ’58, Denver, May 10. Peg retired from teaching in Denver public schools. Survivors include her husband Dick.

Robert W. Kirk ’58, Colorado Springs, July 3. Robert was professor emeritus at Nebraska Wesleyan University. He returned to Colorado Springs in 1975, where he co-founded a private accounting firm that he operated until his retirement.

Gary J. Richardson ’60, Lakewood, Colo., Dec. 16, 2002. Gary is survived by his wife Joanne, three children, and three grandchildren.

Stephen J. Sprague ’64, Albuquerque, N.M., July 25. Stephen was an attorney with the law firm of Atkinson & Kelsey, P.A., although he also worked for New Mexico Legal Aid, Colorado Rural Legal Services, and the United Farm Worker’s Union, to name a few. He practiced tai chi for 25 years and had a deep appreciation for art, poetry, music, and theater. He is survived by his wife Jane, his sister Sharon Sprague ’72, and his cousins, Stephen Ailes ’67 and Richard Ailes ’72. His father, Marshall Sprague, who preceded Stephen in death, was a noted Western historian and author.

William K. Woodard ’66, Albuquerque, N.M., Feb. 7. Bill had a passion for country western music and was a member of the Bunkhouse Band. Survivors include his wife Cecilia.

Diana Padelford Binkley ’68, Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Aug. 24, following back surgery. Diana served on the college's Board of Trustees from 1998 to 2002, a term marked by high hopes for students. Friend Eben Moulton ’68 remembers Diana's enthusiastic trips to the admission office to read the essays of prospective students: “She loved imagining the many dreams of a new freshman class engaged in learning. Diana lived a life of intelligence, honesty, and wonder.” She was interested in yoga, massage, holistic healing, and early childhood education, and her childhood on Orcas Island left her with a lasting love of water and oceanic creatures. Survivors include husband Nick ’68, children Byron and Pepper, sister Janet Padelford ’74, and sister-in-law Martha N. Binkley ’78.

Mark A. Edgar ’70, Colorado Springs, May 15. Mark was a real estate appraiser. Survivors include his wife of 30 years Susan Shockey Edgar ’70, his sister-in-law Margot Shockey Funke ’73, and his children, Tom and Kristin.

Jennifer T. Moulton ’71, Denver, July 28, of a rare blood disorder. Jennifer was Denver’s longtime planning director and was instrumental in the revitalization of downtown Denver. From 1989 to 1992, Jennifer served as president of Historic Denver, an advocacy group seeking to preserve historic architecture and culture in the city. In 1998, Mayor Wellington Webb named her to head the Community Planning and Development Agency. Mayor Webb called her “a great person – small in stature, but a giant for her heart and her spirit.” In 1991, Colorado College presented her the Louis T. Benezet Award for career achievement. Survivors include her long-time partner Rick Pederson and her brother Eben Moulton ’68.

James T. Schmid ’84, Seattle, Wash., March 17, while skiing in British Columbia. James was an attorney with the attorney general’s office in Seattle. Survivors include his wife Mary and their two daughters.

Robert W. Jagger ’86, Colorado Springs, March 11. Survivors include his brother Ronald ’85.

Charles D. Blumenstein ’96, Oakland, Calif., May 17, of stomach cancer. Charlie was a hydrogeologist. Survivors include his wife Chantelle and his parents Jack and Sarah. Family and friends have established the Charlie Blumenstein Water and Wildlife Conservation Fund to support student internships working for the Nature Conservancy in Idaho. Hans M. Guenther, Upper Montclair, N.J., June 20. During World War II, Hans was in charge of the V-5/V-12 students during the duration of the program at CC. Survivors include his wife Nancy Martsolf Guenther ’44 and his daughter Susan Guenther Enger ’68.

Monique Hitchcock, Colorado Springs, June 7. Monique was a medical technologist and wife of Eldon Hitchcock, professor emeritus of chemistry. Survivors include her husband, her daughter Janine Hitchcock Smith ’86, son-in-law David Smith ’84, and son Daniel Hitchcock ’89.

Nancy Moore, Colorado Springs, July 15. Nancy was a staff assistant in the chemistry department at CC.

Beatrice Roeder, Colorado Springs, June 12. Folklorist and former faculty member at CC. Beatrice was the wife of David Roeder, math professor at CC, and mother of Bryan Roeder ’95.
