Martha Herbert Kelly '33, Fairport, N.Y., June 18, 2001. Survivors include her sister, Georgia Herbert Silliman '43.

Maryagnes Wehrle LaPorte '33, San Diego, Calif., Feb. 7. Maryagnes was a mother and homemaker.

Survivors include her son, Ray Hardy Jr., and his family.

Lucia Weaver Stapleton '33, Colorado Springs, Colo., Nov. 22. Lucia was a retired librarian.

Joe M. Boothe '34, Seattle, Wash., July 22, 2002. Survivors include his daughter, Bonnie Boothe Hoppin '57, and grandson, Stephen Hoppin '86.

Wilbur H. Larson '35, Grand Junction, Colo., Nov. 25. Wilbur was retired from the Bureau of Standards. After retiring, he volunteered in the local high schools, where he tutored students in math and the sciences. While a student, Wilbur, who attended CC on a track scholarship, set a record in the 880-yard race with a time of 1:56.6. This record stood for many years. Survivors include his wife Kathy. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert '38.

Elizabeth Foster Lennox '35, Colorado Springs, Colo., Dec. 11. Betty was a member of the metro committee and a development volunteer at CC, where she also belonged to the Woman's Educational Society, Fifty-year Club, and the Friends of the Library.

Margaret Kelley Smith '37, Colorado Springs, Colo., Jan. 31. Margaret taught music in the Colorado Springs public schools in addition to teaching private lessons in violin.

Leonard von Bibra Sutton '37, Denver, Colo., Dec. 16. Leonard was a retired chief justice of the Colorado Supreme Court until 1968, when President Johnson appointed him to head the Foreign Claims Commission in Washington, D.C. He served as president of CC's alumni association in 1952 and received an honorary degree from the college in 1987. Survivors include his sister, Jane Sutton Nelson '33. He was preceded in death by his wife Janette, his sister, Alice Sutton Kinyon '34, and his brother, Robert '39.

Richard A. Dickison '38, Laurenburg, N.C., Jan. 9. Dick retired in 1977, after 32 years with the Dupont Company. Survivors include his daughter, Judith Dickison '64, his son, Richard '71, his brother, Raymond '40, his sister-in-law, Carol Healey Atwood '43, his niece, Catherine Atwood Points '76, and his nephews, Dan '77 and Roland Jr. '81. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Healey Dickison '40, his sister, Anna Dickison Dalton '33, his brother, Roland '43, and his brother-in-law, John Atwood '42.

Margaret Cochran VanArsdale '39, Sedona, Ariz., Oct. 10. Survivors include her son, John Van Arsdale '63, and her daughter, Lise Ann Van Arsdale Hansen '73. She was preceded in death by her husband William '40.

Joseph A. Massie '40, Winchester, Va., Dec. 16. Joseph was an attorney and member of the American Bar Association. He was founder and first president of the Winchester Exchange Club, and served on the extension committee of the National Exchange Club. Survivors include his wife Teresa.

Jean Barkalow Robinson '40, Kent, Wash., Feb. 11, 1999. Survivors include her sister, Mary Barkalow Joyce '38, and her cousin, Rosalie Johnson Mow '51.

Ruth Stewart Woodruff '41, Colorado Springs, Colo., April 8. She and her husband Clinton Woodruff '40 owned and operated Stewart's Photo Inc. Ruth's husband preceded her in death.

Cecile Haley Andersen '43, Fort Myers, Fla., Nov. 11.

Dorothy Osborn Campbell '43 (MAT '70), Colorado Springs, Colo., April 13. She retired from teaching after 30 years with School District 11. Dorothy was an active member of the Fifty Year Club and a career volunteer at the college. She belonged to the Friends of the Library and the Woman's Educational Society.

Roland B. Dickison '43, Sacramento, Calif., Jan. 8. Rolly was professor emeritus of English at California State University at Sacramento. A folklorist and publisher, Rolly co-edited the books, "Midnight Serenade" and "One Year, One Lifetime," written by classmate Bert Stiles '43, who was killed in WWII. Rolly was an active volunteer at the college, serving on the career committee, the development committee, and as a class agent for many years. Survivors include his sons, Dan '77 and Roland Jr. '81, his brother, Raymond '40, his niece, Judith '64, and nephew, Richard '71. He was preceded in death by his sister, Anna Dickison Dalton '33, and his sister-in-law, Barbara Healey Dickison '40. His brother, Richard '38, passed away a day after Roland.

Waldena Rathje Jackson '43, Pitman, N.J., July 17, 2000. Waldena was a retired co-owner of McDonald's franchises in Woodbury Heights, Paulsboro, and Glassboro. Survivors include her husband David Jackson '42, daughter and son-in-law, Stephen '68 and Sherill Jackson '66 Specht, and granddaughter, Hilary Specht '95.

William C. Bush '44, Fort Myers, Fla., March 21. Bill had a 40-year career in sales and marketing management with several national corporations in New England, the Midwest, and New York City. At CC, Bill served on the reunion giving committee and was a volunteer for the development office. Survivors include his wife Lyndell and his son, Jeff '95.

David C. Brewer '45, Plymouth, Minn., Dec. 27. David was a retired relocation director with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Survivors include his wife Elinore Boyden Brewer '45, his son, David '68, his brother-in-law, George Boyden '41, his niece, Barbara Boyden Walters '69, and his nephew, Mark Boyden '73.

Noel L. Hover '51, Denver, Colo., Jan. 3. Noel was an audiologist and member of Pick 'n' Pan Players and Radio. Survivors include his wife Chelsia and his brother, Freeman '51.

James C. Bergstrom '53, Colorado Springs, Colo., Jan. 26. Jim pursued a career in golf and was a life member of the PGA of America. Survivors include his wife Leslie Lockhart Bergstrom '52, two children, and two grandchildren.

Albert J. Johnson '53, East Orleans, Mass., Jan. 8, 2002. Al and his wife Diane were proprietors of the Nauset House Inn in East Orleans. In addition to his wife, Al's survivors include his brother, James '53.

Howard Kellogg '53, Brawley, Calif., Jan. 19. Howard helped found and develop Quail Mesa Ranches, of which he was a principal and manager until his retirement. Survivors include his wife Margaret Herres Kellogg '53, his son, Howard IV '76, his daughter-in-law, Nancy Vine Kellogg '77, and his brothers, Durrant '54 and Brian '65.

Vija Spalvins Staprans '54, Los Altos, Calif., Dec. 19. Vija was a psychiatrist.

Thomas A. Pankau '55, Bellevue, Wash., Feb. 5. Thomas was a retired elementary reading specialist with the Bellevue Public Schools. Survivors include his four children and his brother, Eugene '62.

 

Mary Vandegrift Ashford '56, Westminster, Colo., March 1, 2002. Mary was a retired social worker. Richard S. Kopp '57, Sandy, Utah, Feb. 13, 2002. Richard was a geologist.

Donald R. Henry '58, Colorado Springs, Colo., April 20. Donald was a retired battalion captain with the Colorado Springs Fire Department. Survivors include his wife Dorothy Duell Henry '58 and his daughter, Amy Henry Scipione '89.

Suzanne Althouse Lodden '58, Evergreen, Colo., March 20. Suzanne worked for Hammond's Hardware, the Department of Motor Vehicles and then Davidson Insurance until her retirement. She is survived by her children, Jeff Lodden and Beth Meehan, and her sister, Carolyn Burke.


Carol Hutchison Murray '58, Colorado Springs, Colo., April 20. Survivors include her aunts, Alice Boatright Tudor '37 and Jo Garner Boatright '57, and her uncle, Harvey Boatright '53. She was preceded in death by her mother Ida Boatright Hutchison '65.

Catherine Wagner Brosier '60, Amarillo, Texas, March 22, 2002. Survivors include her husband Glen Brosier '59.

Myrtle Telleen Collins MAT '60, Colorado Springs, Colo., Feb. 2003. Myrtle was an educator, author, drama coach, producer, and lecturer in Colorado, Hawaii, and Laos. She was a member of CC's Woman's Educational Society and Friends of the Library.

Douglas K. Cowles '64, Albuquerque, N.M., Dec. 20, 2001. Douglas was a professor of English at S.U.N.Y. Survivors include his wife Kay.

Raymond F. Cool '68 , Colorado Springs, Colo., March 22. Raymond worked in human services. Survivors include his aunt, Helen Laucks Cool '37, and his cousin, Carolyn Cool Hickerson '65. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cortland '38 and Aleanor Haaff '38 Cool, and his uncles, Wyan Cool '29, Arthur Cool '31, and Russell Cool '37.

Randolph W. Collyer '70, Perkinsville, Vt., April 29, 2002. Randolph was director of the Vermont Land and Sea School.

Todd W. Brown '73, Denver, Colo., Nov. 24. Todd was the self-proclaimed "Best damn cab driver in Denver" for the past 20 years. His great passion in life was golf, and he was president of the Denver City Park Players Golf Club. Survivors include his companion, Michelle Egen.

John Lingner '73, River Forest, Ill., Nov. 19. John was an attorney and member of the Union League Club of Chicago, helping to raise money to upgrade three youth facilities in Chicago. Survivors include his wife Margaret.

Keith W. McCaw '76, Seattle, Wash., Dec. 15. Keith and his brothers, Craig, John, and Bruce '68, built McCaw Cellular Communications into a worldwide cell-phone empire. Keith retired from the company in 1986 as executive vice president and remained on the board until 1991. In addition to his brothers, Keith is survived by his wife Mary and their daughters, Marion and Katherine.

James A. Nightingale '77, Arvada, Colo., March 2. Jim most recently worked for First Horizon, providing credit card processing technical support. Survivors include his daughters, Jillian and Jancy.

Thomas A. Farrow '78, Gig Harbor, Wash., April 3, 2002. Survivors include his wife Lori.

Anne E. Schelly '78, Glendora, Calif., Sept. 30.

Brigham Olson '85, May 10, in Laguna Beach, Calif., just hours before his official induction into the Colorado College Athletics Hall of Fame. Horst Richardson, CC soccer coach, calls Olson "a creative promoter of our men's soccer program at a pivotal time, and the success of his years at CC set standards of excellence which we attempt to achieve every year. His devotion to his alma mater and to our soccer program merits enormous gratitude on our part. Although many former student/athletes deserve Hall of Fame consideration, only a few merit Hall of Fame induction. Brigham has earned this honor because he was the best of the best." Olson lettered four years as a defender on the men's soccer team and helped the Tigers earn bids to the NCAA tournament in all four of his seasons. He still owns the school record for most career starts, with 91, and served as co-captain as a junior in 1983 and as a senior in 1984, when CC advanced to the national quarterfinals. He earned NCAA All-Midwest honors both of those campaigns. A four-time all-conference selection in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Soccer League (RMISL), he also was named to the NCAA All-Far West Team as a sophomore in 1982. He scored 16 goals and assisted on seven during his career. He leaves behind wife Leslie Calvin '87 Olson and three children, Elliot, Madeline, and Claire.

John H. Saliba '91, Tucson, Ariz., March 8, while visiting Thailand. John was owner and president of WorldTrek Expeditions. Survivors include his parents, John and Catherine Saliba.

Samuel P. Bowen '97, Krabi Province, Thailand, Oct. 11, in an accident. He loved to read and had a deep commitment to helping others in the field of literacy. Sam was a teacher and taught in San Francisco, Costa Rica, and Japan. Survivors include his parents, Joseph Bowen and JoAnn Albrecht, and his sister, Rachel.

Benjamin I. Bornstein '98, Keystone Ski Resort, Colo., Nov. 25, in an accident while working. Survivors include his parents Peter and Emily.

Joseph Rosenblum '04, March 21, in a kayaking accident in Baja, Mexico.
