Steven Copes Fun Facts

Q: Where do you get your musical inspiration?
A: Inspiration comes from a desire to communicate what's bouncing around in your head and heart at that particular moment in a performance, and using the composer's genius to feed off of (and study and practice..) to accomplish that. I've started to watch a lot more master classes of other artists on Youtube, listening to other performers, reading about music and the lives of composers- all of these things help add flavor to the stew! Basically, I feel that inspiration is a combination of lots of things coming together at the right time, and being open and brave enough to take advantage of those opportunities.

Q: What made you first realize you wanted to pursue a career in music?
A: I don't think there was any particular point at which I had this realization about a 'career.' I'm extremely grateful to have had the experiences and training that I've had that made me want to lead a life in music, and being able to make a career or a living with music is, simply, icing on the cake. I'm lucky to have had truly supportive parents and teachers, and amazing colleagues around me from a very young age (and still today!) that all encouraged and inspired me to work harder and make music more beautifully. nbsp;
Q: What are some current projects you are working on?
A: I am performing Hartmann's Concerto Funebre for Violin & Strings for the first time in a few weeks with the SPCO, and am looking forward to hearing what it sounds like with outside of my practice room.

Q: What drew you to the Colorado College Summer Music Festival?
A: I met Scott Yoo a long time ago in St. Paul where he was guest conducting, and he recommended me to music director Sue Grace- thanks Scott! I always enjoy the camaraderie, the family atmosphere, playing chamber music with old friends, and getting to hear and teach all the fabulous students there. Coming to CC is like being with a wonderful extended family.

Q: What are you most excited for this upcoming festival season?
A: I'm looking forward to coaching and teaching again as well as 4 performances of pieces I've never played before!
