Dates and Deadlines

Festival dates are June 7 - 27, 2015. Accepted students must be able to attend the entire festival.

Application Deadline: February 9, 2015.

Application Requirements

The Colorado College Summer Music Festival accepts applications for violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, timpani/percussion, and piano students.

Interested students should be pre-professional, advanced students. Accepted students will range in age from 16 years old (must be 16 by June 1, 2015) to students at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. 

Fee

Full scholarships that cover tuition and room and board are provided to all accepted students.  A non-refundable application fee of $70 must accompany all applications and a non-refundable $160 registration fee is required upon acceptance. Tuition for this program is normally $2,500. 

Cello and Bass Applicants:  The Festival will offer a travel grant of $200 to accepted cellists and bassists who are flying and need to buy a seat for their instrument.  Payment will be awarded after they arrive at the festival with receipt in hand.

For your application to be considered, the Music Festival will need you to complete an application and include:

  1. A letter of recommendation from your principal music instructor.  The letter may be emailed to festival@coloradocollege.edu or mailed to Colorado College Summer Music Festival, 14 E. Cache La Poudre, Colorado Springs, CO, 80903.
  2. Non-refundable application fee of $70, payable by mailing a check or money order to Colorado College Summer Music Festival, 14 E. Cache La Poudre, Colorado Springs, CO, 80903, or by making an online credit card payment and noting your payment order number on your application.
  3.  Audition by video or live performance.  
    • If you choose to audition by video, you will need to provide a link to a high quality video, no longer than 12 minutes, that you have uploaded to YouTube as a 'public' or 'unlisted' video to allow our reviewers to view.  Please see the instructions in the YouTube 'Getting Started" tutorial if you are unfamiliar with the process.
    • If you choose to audition via live performance, you can sign up for a time and location on our audition calendar.  (NOTE: We cannot accommodate percussion instruments at live auditions.  Please submit a video link.)

Audition Information:

String players 

Include two solo works of contrasting styles, showing your technique and musicality, preferably from different time periods. Accompaniment is preferred but not required. No excerpts are required.

Wind and brass players 

Include the orchestral excerpts listed for your instrument as well as two works or movements of contrasting styles, showing your technique and musicality, preferably from different time periods. Your audition may be solo or accompanied, whichever you feel best showcases your ability. Click on your instrument below to download excerpts. HORN and CLARINET players, please see specific requirements under excerpts.

Pianists

Pianists should include a movement of a chamber work (sonata, trio, quartet etc.) performed within the last year and a solo work of contrasting style, showing your technique and musicality, preferably from a different time period. Please include a repertoire list of chamber works, including sonatas, that you have studied and performed. No excerpts are required.

Excerpts

Flute excerpts (Afternoon of a Faun: solo parts only)
The exposition of the 1st movement of either the Mozart G Major or D Major Concerto is recommended as one of the two works/movements in addition to the excerpts, but not required.

Oboe excerpts
The exposition of the Mozart Concerto is required (music is not provided at link).

Clarinet excerpts

In this order for all applicants.
1. Mozart Concerto, exposition of the 1st mvt through measure 98. 1:30 - (page 1) 
2. Rimsky Korsakov, Capriccio Espagnol, 1st mvt, letter C to 11 bars before the end. :30 - (page 3)
3. Stravinsky, Firebird, Variation of the Firebird, complete. 1:30 - (pages 6-7)
4. Brahms, 3rd Symphony, 1st mvt, letter B to 3 after letter C (count all rests) 1:15 - (page 2)
5. Sibelius 1st Symphony, 1st mvt, opening solo. 1:30 - (page 4)
6. Sibelius 1st Symphony, 3rd mvt, :30 - (page 5)
7. Beethoven 6th Symphony, 2nd mvt, 1:00 - (page 4)

The Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie or the exposition of the 1st movement of the Mozart Concerto is required as one of the two works in addition to the excerpts.

Bassoon excerpts
The Mozart Bassoon Concerto K. 191. Meas. 35-71 is recommended as one of the two works/movements in addition to the excerpts, but not required.

Horn excerpts

The exposition of the Mozart's 1st movement of Concerto No. 2 or No. 4 is required in addition to the excerpts.  Horn students do not need to perform a second work/movement.

Trumpet excerpts

Tenor Trombone excerpts
The first movement of the Casterede Sonata is recommended as one of the two works/movements in addition to the excerpts, but not required.

Bass Trombone excerpts
The opening of the first mvt until ms 80 of the Ewazen Concerto is recommended as one of the two works in addition to the excerpts, but not required.
