Student Code of Conduct
Colorado College is committed to providing a safe environment that is conducive to academic success for each member of its community while fostering socially responsible and productive citizens. To this end, the Colorado College Student Code of Conduct is founded on five community values: respect, integrity, responsibility, community, and fairness.
It is a privilege for students to attend Colorado College and it is expected that all students uphold these values, which are further explained in the Student Conduct Policies. All students are expected to cooperate with college officials and any investigations of possible misconduct. Students who are found responsible for violating the Student Conduct Policies in the Student Code of Conduct will typically be held accountable through the Student Conduct Procedures. The Student Code of Conduct is not intended to be an exhaustive list of rules to follow; rather, students are expected to internalize and make appropriate decisions based on these five community values and the Student Conduct Policies. Our purpose in responding to alleged conduct violations is to: (1) educate one another; provide an opportunity for growth and development; ensure student safety; and promote an environment that supports the educational mission of the college; and (2) to hold students accountable for their actions.
By accepting admission to and enrolling at Colorado College, students are obligated to conduct themselves consistently with the values of Colorado College, the Student Code of Conduct, and other college policies and procedures. Students may be summarily dismissed from Colorado College by the president of the college, the vice president for student life/dean of students, or the dean’s designee if the student's conduct is not in the best interest of the college or their behavior is deemed in violation of these standards. The Student Code of Conduct and the student conduct process apply to the conduct of individual students, informal groups of students, and college-recognized groups of students.
The Student Code of Conduct sets a range of expectations for the Colorado College student no matter where or when the conduct may take place. Therefore, the Student Code of Conduct applies to behaviors that take place on the campus, at college-sponsored events or programs, and applies off-campus - whenever the administration determines that the off-campus conduct has a direct impact on the educational mission or interests of the college. Colorado College students studying in off-campus contexts or participating in college sponsored programs remain responsible to uphold the Colorado College Student Code of Conduct as well as the laws relevant to their location. The Student Code of Conduct also applies to conduct that takes place at any time from the date that a student is offered admission to the college until the student has completed graduation - including summers and between semesters. Further, the Student Code of Conduct applies to students when they host guests who violate college policies. In these cases, students may be held accountable for the misconduct of their guests.
Violations of federal, state, and local laws are incorporated as offenses under the Student Code of Conduct. Such violations of law occurring either on or off campus may result in the initiation of conduct proceedings, especially if college leadership determines that the behavior has a direct impact on the educational mission or interests of the college. Colorado College may initiate conduct proceedings against a student charged with violating federal, state, or local laws without regard to the existence or possibility of civil or criminal proceedings. It is the policy of Colorado College to pursue timely resolution through its conduct proceedings, rather than to delay campus proceedings until the outcome of criminal and/or civil proceedings.
Those who are aware of misconduct are encouraged to report it as quickly as possible to any Division of Student Life staff member, the Student Life Office, and/or campus safety. Students concerned about possible conduct ramifications that might arise from providing the college with notice of potential acts of misconduct should understand that the College may, at its discretion, grant students reprieve from sanctions.
Colorado College may also extend its jurisdiction to alleged misconduct that occurs prior to, but is not reported until after the graduation of the accused student, as long as the alleged misconduct is reported within six months of its occurrence. Otherwise, there is no time limit on reporting of violations of the Student Code of Conduct, as long as the offending student is still enrolled at Colorado College. However, the longer one waits to report an incident, the harder it becomes for the college to obtain evidence and witness statements and make a determination regarding alleged violations.
Visitors to and guests of Colorado College are also protected by the Student Code of Conduct. Visitors and guests may report violations of the Student Code of Conduct committed by members of the Colorado College community against them to the Student Life Office or Campus Safety.
