Julian Plaza's time with Colorado College Speech and Debate started the fall of 2006 as a sophomore student at CC. He continued debating until his graduation in 2009, and assisted coaching the Debate Team the year after. Julian returned to CC the fall of 2011 to assume the role of Director of Forensics and Debate.
Julian earned a B.A. in Political Science and Philosophy from CC and a M.A. in International Relations from the University of Warwick, UK. His Masters work focused on the way security issues are spoken out of the realm of policy making and into military strategy. Julian has been involved in Parliamentary and Cross-Examination Policy Debate as a coach and competitor since 2003. Originally from Colorado, Julian enjoys working and living at his alma mater in his home state.
Julian's coaching emphasis is on National Parliamentary Debate Association Parli Debate, National Forensics Association Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and International Debate Education Association British Parliamentary Debate.
Sarah Hinkle is delighted with the opportunity to work with her dual interest of public speaking and theatre arts to students on an individual level with CC’s Speech and Debate Team. Sarah completed her Bachelor of Science in Education in Theatre Arts and Speech Communication and went directly into teaching junior high students in theatre and speech, directing plays, and was an assistant coach for the high school Speech Team for Liberty Public School District in Missouri for the next 4 years.
In 2009, Sarah and her family made the bold decision to move to Colorado, where she soon became an assistant coach with CC's Speech and Debate program. During this time, Sarah earned her Masters of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction, with a Reading Specialist endorsement at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. In 2015, Sarah moved to a full-time position as the head Speech Coach, with her primary roles including: coaching students in 11 individual events, developing communication workshops for presentations in the classroom, guest presenter on implementing effective rhetoric in formal and informal settings, training students in British Parliamentary Debate and directing students in Mock Trial rehearsals. Sarah enjoys the diverse group of students that CC has to offer and finds their enthusiasm and engaging personalities incredibly fulfilling.
When she is not coaching or traveling to tournaments, you can find her rooting around in her garden in the sunshine, running, or spending time with her two little boys.
