History

Throughout the history of Colorado College, we have been fortunate to receive financial gifts from alumni for many of the facilities on its campus. So it was in 1963 when Edward H Honnen '21, recognized a need for a quality ice rink. He contributed $750,000 for the design/build of the ice rink which would become as CC President Worner would later observe "the most heavily used sports facility" on campus.

Today, Honnen Ice Arena is recognized as a pre-eminent sports facility in Colorado Springs and the region. We host figure skating, league hockey, CC intramural's, speedskating, learn to skate, and pick up hockey to name just a few, and have evolved into a community center and a college institution.

In the mid-1980s, Honnen suggested the arena be enclosed with walls, lighting be improved and a natural gas heating system be installed to avoid ever increasing utility cost. This idea was instrumental in the arena garnering even more national and international attention as legends of figure skating and hockey were attracted to its continued superior reputation and the highest level of ice quality. Notables such as Peggy Fleming, 1968 Women's Olympic Gold Medalist; Adam Rippon, 2016 Mens Olympic Bronze Medalist and Jaden Schwartz, 2018 Stanley Cup Champion have used or continue to use this facility.

Generations of alumni, families, students and the community continue to use Honnen Ice Arena as a place of memories and fun even as we prepare to design and build a new state-of-the-art ice arena. We will continue our commitment to provide outstanding ice quality and superlative customer service to any and all who wish to enjoy an experience shared by almost 60 years of history.

In 2016, Colorado College Alumni Ed Robson donated $8 million to bring the Division 1 hockey team back on campus. Robson Arena, which is slated to open in the fall of 2021, will replace Honnen Ice Arena and be the official home game venue for the Colorado College Tigers.
