Survey Information

Climate surveys have been recognized as one of the most effective ways of assessing the work environment within organizations. These surveys often provide insight into the conditions associated with supportive and healthy work environments. Climate surveys typically seek information from members of an organization about leadership, diversity, communication, benefits and job satisfaction.

The Colorado College climate survey statements solicited feedback on a broad range of topics focused around 15 dimensions reflecting organizational and managerial competencies. The survey instrument measured the extent to which employees are involved and engaged in the organization and ultimately, the quality of the workplace engagement. In addition to the core survey statements, the survey included additional statements about specific college initiatives and areas of interest.

Why did the college conduct a survey of its staff and faculty?
Employee feedback is essential to identifying areas where the college is doing well and where improvement is needed. Being a great place to work is the goal and priority, and this work will contribute to the strategic planning activities. The president, cabinet, Staff Council, and Faculty Executive Committee endorsed surveying staff and faculty to obtain a comprehensive picture of the college climate and culture.
Who participated in the survey?
Members of the Colorado College community participated in the survey, with 546 full- and part-time staff and faculty responding. This represents 76 percent of all faculty and staff, well over the average of 38-46 percent for most colleges and universities.
When was the survey administered?
The most recent Colorado College climate survey was administered from October 8-28, 2015. In Spring 2013, the same climate survey was conducted, in partnership with ModernThink, March 27-April 12, 2013, with a 64 percent response.
Who administered the survey?
ModernThink, a nationally recognized third-party vendor, administered the survey. ModernThink developed the survey based on ongoing research of organizations that have been successful in building workplace cultures that enhance performance.
Will my responses on the survey and email address identity remain confidential?
Yes. ModernThink will not release any raw data to the college. CC Human Resources staff will only see aggregated data, not individual responses. The survey is completed on ModernThink's confidential website. The email address is only used to access the survey and to ensure that only one survey per employee is completed.
What happened to my responses to open-ended questions?
ModernThink provided verbatim responses to the president and the director of human resources. They may also have been shared with cabinet members.
Why was demographic information requested on the survey?
The demographic information (i.e. gender, age, job role, etc.) helps ModernThink better understand the patterns and themes in the survey data. As the confidentiality of your responses is critical, ModernThink will not report your individual demographic data. Group demographic data will only be reported when there are five or more respondents in a particular group.
