This course will introduce the students to the basic fundamentals of GIS and how it is used in humanitarian relief efforts. The skills learned are directly transferable to any discipline. The primary software we will use is ArcGIS 10.4.1. The first half of the course is a combination of lectures (demonstrations) and applied lab exercises focusing on spatial inquiry and introduction of commonly used tools in GIS. With much of the time being spent actually using the GIS software. The second half of the course will consist of 2 parts. Students will spend time doing volunteer GIS work that will benefit relief efforts for Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team and GISCorps (location to be determined). The second part will be spent working on final project Story Maps (ArcGIS Online format).
