GR 220/FM 200/CO 200/FG 206/GR 320: Intermediate Topics in German Studies: The Antihero
|Block B||1 CC Unit (4 semester hours)||Lisiecki, Chet|
Course Description: Many recent hit television series star an antihero: Walter White (Breaking Bad), Frank Underwood (House of Cards), Dexter Morgan (Dexter), Don Draper (Mad Men), Tony Soprano (The Sopranos). These characters straddle the line between good and evil, making morally questionable choices for seemingly ethical and justified reasons. They are also almost always men. In this course we will investigate and trouble the long history of the antihero in literature, comics, television, and film. We will question why the antihero is so compelling and complex; how such complexity intersects with theories of race, gender, and sexuality; and why this matters for questions of identity and representation.
