Resources & Guidelines for Points

  • Please plan to meet with your advisees as soon as possible. Students will register using the Preregistration application in Self-Service Banner, (SSB) but are encouraged to use Stellic for planning purposes prior to the opening of Preregistration.

  • January Half Block is not a part of the preregistration process. Registration for this block opened for all students in Add/Drop on Monday, November 1 (found under "H" Block under the Spring 2022 term)

  • Student Preregistration Passcodes: All faculty advisors have access to each of their advisee(s) Preregistration passcode and transcripts in Self-Service Banner (SSB) by logging in and clicking on the Faculty Tab/My Advisees. Students are assigned a new passcode for each Preregistration period (generated on 10/13/21)

  • Faculty PINs: All instructors with a teaching schedule have been assigned a Consent of Instructor PIN (COI PIN) per term. You will find your COI PIN on the Faculty Tab/Your Teaching Schedule. There are two ways a student may ask for this PIN: 

    • If a course requires a COI, the student must have this COI PIN to preregister for the course. After preregistration, all courses with COI designations will require the assigned COI PIN in SSB from either listed professor(s) on the course.

    • If you have a course listed as "COI or a prerequisite" the PIN will not be required unless the student does not meet the prerequisite; in this situation the COI PIN will override the prerequisite error. 

  • Department PINs: All departments have been assigned a Consent of Department PIN (COD PIN). If there is a COD PIN (Consent of Department PIN) designation on a course, only Department Chairs will have access to their department's COD PIN under their Faculty Services tab in Banner from the "Consent of Department" menu item (this is not the same as the instructor's consent pin).

  • Independent Study, Research, Thesis Blocks: Students who are planning an indpendent study, thesis, or research are required to complete the application found on "Our Services" page. These courses are built for each individual student (they get their own CRN#). Once the application on our webpage is completed, they may use a "GS391 placeholder" to fill that block in Preregistration while their paperwork is being processed. GS391s DO NOT provide credit and will never post to the transcript. Please don't have the student sign up for the course reference in the course schedule either for a 1-on-1 block; these are meant to show the blocks and faculty who are available for the course. 
  • Once an advisee submits their Preregistration, they may go back in and make changes as many times as they choose while the Preregistration period is open. Advisors will be notified of any additional changes to the student's schedule once the original submission is made.

  • Blocks Off: Students who are taking time off: one or more block off, will need to contact the Advising Hub to process the official form. First-years and Sophomore students must be granted permission from the Student Opportunities and Advising Hub to take a block off. Juniors and Seniors are allowed to take one block off per semester and may us the GS391 placeholder during the Preregistration period but must also complete the official request form through the Advising Hub. See Student Leave Policy.

  • Make sure to fill each block with a block seminar course for blocks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, & 8.

  • Adjuncts may be added at the time of Preregistration but it is recommended to use points towards a block seminar course.
  • Students planning an independent block (thesis or independent study) will need to do two things: 

    • Complete the appropriate application available under Our Services page. Application processing may vary in time depending on the quickness of returned approvals and the volume of applications received.
    • In Preregistration, search and select the general studies placeholder "GS391" for the independent block. This will temporarily fill the block while the Preregistration period is open allowing students to complete their full schedule and submit their Preregistration on time. Please note, the GS391 placeholder MUST be replaced by the correct thesis or independent study before the block begins in order to receive credit and a grade for the course.     
  • Don't forget to use your points! Check out our, Guidelines on Points and Last Year's Points to help you strategize your points distribution. You may submit Preregistration without using points but know you are risking being placed on a waiting list if the demand for the course is high and another student bids a higher point value than you do.

  • Students who are signing up for Psychology's BYOB courses in blocks 5 & 6 will need to do two things:
    • Register for the course sequence pairing as you would any other course.
    • Also use a general studies placeholder "GS391" to fill both blocks (5 & 6). This may seem like a course overload but BYOB courses are actually designed as two extended format courses and therefore students will also need two block seminar courses to recognize a full course load; the GS391s will act as this in their place and will be removed once Spring Preregistration is processed in the Fall. 
  • Students who are taking time off: one or more block off, will need to contact the Advising Hub to process the official form. During Preregistration, students are submitting their one course for registration for each block but they also should have been planning back-up options in the event they do not get into their class; the degree progress planning and tracking tool "Stellic" can accommodate for multiple courses planned in each block.

After Preregistration is processed and students see how they’ve placed into courses, if they have been waitlisted for any of their blocks, students can use the Course Schedule to review courses that have available seats.

  • If one of their planned back-up courses has a seat available, then they can sign up for it using Add/Drop once it opens.
  • If none of their planned back-up courses have available seats, then this is where the advising support really helps from faculty advisors and Hub advisors as students should then consider looking at courses that fulfill a Gen Ed requirement, a gateway course into an intended major (for first-years), or alternative major/minor requirements.

When using Add/Drop, students should be careful when clicking through the registration screens as they will be prompted for a new waitlist and a new position if the class is full by the time they add the course – they can choose to proceed which will relinquish their original waitlist in their Preregistered course or they can reset and try a new course that has available seats.

Guidelines for Points

Students can prepare for their registration meeting with their faculty advisor by thinking about the following items...

A: Things that can increase the need of using points:
  • A course is offered once to a few times in the year
  • A course is an introductory/prerequisite course into a major/minor 
  • A professor is in high-demand

A: Students have 40 points per semester to distribute between their four blocks. Here are some strategies to consider: 

  • Choose your most essential course (one) and place your heaviest point bid on it while still sparing points to distribute between your remaining selections. Note that introductory level science courses are in high demand and therefore require heavier point bids. 
  • If a course is offered more than once check previous years' points and seat availability to see if there was a lesser favorited block. 
  • Keep your schedule flexible or have back up plans ready in the event your plan does not pan out.
A: Be sure to check under "Prerequisites" before signing up for a class. If you do not have a prerequisite, you won't be allowed to register for the course without permission from the Professor listed on the course via their COI PIN (consent of instructor pin). If you think you have completed the prerequisite or will have completed it before the block starts, you may contact the professor and get their COI PIN to use in the preregistration application. When this is used, it should override the prerequisite error.
A: Don't be afraid to talk to other students, ask the resident adviser in your residence hall, faculty teaching the course(s), or upper classmen their thoughts. Utilize the community around you who are familiar with the point system.

A: Students can preregister for block seminar courses that fill each block (blocks 1 - 4 and 5-8). Students can also preregister for their adjuncts but it is recommended to use points towards a traditional, block seminar course.

January/Half (H) Block course registration will not be part of the Preregistration process. H block encompasses both 1.0 unit and 0.50 unit course offerings during the month of January. H Block registration opens one week before Spring Preregistration in the Fall; check your email and stay tuned to Daily Digests for further announcements.
