Extending Our Reach Committee Meeting

Meeting with the Community on 17 October 2012

Review of list of attendees for the upcoming meeting with the community.  Identification of organizations who have not yet responded who we particularly would like to attend.

Update on Meeting with Alumni and Parents on 13 October 2012 (Elliot)

Themes that emerged from the meeting:

  • We should market our “bio-rhythm,” our movements together in campus life, that the block plan creates.
  • We should be known for being a place where you are known.  Being known makes you accountable.  We are a place of “individuals.”
  • Possible initiative: Institute of Global Change.

Update on Email Outreach Project

Communications has created a comment card that has the three simple questions.  The cards have been circulated at Homecoming and will soon be sent via email to alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, and members of the Board of Trustees.  We have set up three email accounts that allow people to send feedback directly to each committee.

Discussion of Draft Goals

We should plan to submit 3 to 5 goals to the Steering Committee on 15 November 2012.  Each goal should have an accompanying rationale and a list of possible initiatives related to it.  Draft goals at the moment fall into four areas: Community, Diversity, Internationalization, and Reputation.

Community: “Donut” analogy from all-staff meeting: CC students are involved on campus, skip over the Colorado Springs community, and then look to the rest of the world for outreach and community service.

Our location in the Southwest.  What is the Southwest?  If we had a research institute for the Southwest, we might want to partner with other institutions that engage with the region they are in.  We need to look into all of the implications for creating something like an Institute for Southwest Studies.

Diversity: We need to focus on all kinds of diversity: diversity of thought, diversity of language, and diversity of culture.  Is diversity something that has been accepted as a weak point of CC?  It might just be that diversity is an especially difficult issue.  Diversity is connected to access, which is connected to the funding of financial aid.  Are we seeking socio-economic diversity?

Reputation: In reviewing the goals in this area, we agreed on the necessity of the word “immediate” that appears in the first goal about name recognition.  Take our name: both “Colorado” and “College” are general terms.  Does this impede our ability to have immediate recognition?  It seems like the “The” attached to Colorado College has been dropped recently.  This is in part due to the fact that the “the” did not go over well with those outside the college when we used it.  However, it is what we do at CC that defines us and not our name or a “The” before “Colorado College.”  Our focus should be on what we do, both specifically as CC and more generally as a liberal arts institution.  What would be the one word that captures the essential character of CC?  Intensity.  

Marketing/Branding: A real branding initiative is good for centralizing a campus community.  Before we can do that, though, we need a central story that each department can tell.  We need to drive home the strengths of CC and the ideals of CC in a concerted effort. Marketing/branding is tough at a place like CC because we tend to value being individuals so strongly.  How do we get past this tension between centralized marketing and individual values?  We need a branding initiative with a central structure that avoids micro-managing and allows for individual/departmental freedom. How do we overcome the past branding initiatives that have failed?  We do this through a bottom-up process that is substantive.  The biggest question we need to answer: who are we targeting?  We have to recognize that we might not be able to reach everybody.  How do we prioritize who we want to reach?  Who is it that we want to reach the most?
